I HAVE RETURNED.

I know you did.

First of all, HAPPY 2017!!!!! Can you believe it’s the new year? (Well, maybe you can since we’re already a month in but my brain is slow, so humor me.) I am officially back from my hiatus and happy to post my very first post of 2017!

Why yes, it is still January and I did say I’d be taking all of January off but I’m soooo changeable (ha! two Moriarty references). Okay, really I saw there was a new edition of Beautiful Books and it was going to close at the end of the month so I couldn’t help but jump in. Which means you can all thank Sky and Cait for my early return!

My much needed break was a success and I’m feeling refueled and mostly ready to dive back into things. I’m taking it a little slow and not pushing myself. After new year’s and a pretty full January, and getting out of the habit of blogging/writing, it’s taking a bit of readjusting to settle back into it. But I’m getting there! January consisted of ringing in the new year with a Doctor Who marathon, much binge-watching of BBC’s Merlin with my sister, and watching SEASON 4 OF SHERLOCK (!!!!!!!!!!). So…apparently January has been a BBC month. HA. Every month is a BBC month for me. #Obsessed. January also consisted of a week long vacation with my best friend whom (sadly) lives out of town. But our time together is the bestest, and it was the perfect end to my hiatus. Now I’m back home trying to get things back into order and catch up on stuff.

WHICH MEANS BLOGGING AND WRITING AND THIIIINGS.

The question is, what do my writing plans for 2017 look like? Well, our dear Sky and Cait have concocted the perfect set of questions in this month’s Beautiful People to answer that very question! So let’s get to it…

1.) What were your writing achievements last year?

Some really exciting things went down last year. Mainly only 2, but 2 pretty big ones.
ONE: I dived into my first big, serious edit and, in the process, discovered I actually… *shifty eyes* like editing. *collected gasp* I KNOW. Maybe it was just this particular edit. Maybe it was the story. I DON’T KNOW. But I enjoyed it. And I’ve been avoiding the editing process for, erm, ever. I constantly write one first draft after the next, but avoid the whole revision thing like the plague. But 2016 was the year I was going to actual make progress toward my publishing dream. Which, obviously, included that ever dreaded and much avoided EDITING.
And I did it.
I did the first round of edits in my Beauty and the Beast story, Burning Thorns, and had an absolute blast doing it. That was probably the biggest highlight of 2016.
TWO: For NaNoWriMo I wrote More Gold than Sunlight, the 7th and FINAL book of my Colors of a Dragon Scale series. Which means, I FINISHED THE COADS SERIES. After working on it for 7 NaNos straight. I’m still a little shocked I’ll be not writing a CoaDS book for NaNo this year. But, uh, yeah, I’m quite excited over that achievement.
2016 is definitely a year I’ll remember on the writing front.

2.) What’s on your writerly “to-do list” for 2017?

My number one priority for 2017 is Burning Thorns.

Last year I got the first round of edits done and a ton of amazing critiques from my dear beta-readers (love you guuuuys! <3). This year I’ll be taking those critiques to do the next round of edits. Like I said, my dream is publishing, and to actually get there I’ve got to edit and make for reals progress. THIS IS THE YEAR TO DO THAT. *pretends I’m not hiding under my covers whimpering at the thought*
With that said, I have some specific things I’m hoping (keyword there) to accomplish this year to help this dream become a reality.

My 2017 writerly to-do list includes:

  • Do the second round of edits for Burning Thorns
  • Research potential literary agents
  • Work on a query letter…? (This still terrifies me, but I can at least start making some progress toward it maybe perhaps. At least start seriously researching how to go about making one?)
  • Be more active on social media. (I fail at this but I’m determined to start commenting more on blogs and actually using my instagram and twitter accounts.)
  • Read more writing help books. (Because I, erm, never do this and I seriously need to.)
  • Participate in NaNoWriMo (duh!). And for the first time in 7 years I have no clue what I’ll be writing for NaNo and IT’S EXCITING.

SO. That’s what 2017 will maybe perhaps possibly look like for me on the writing side? Like I said, my biggest focus will be Burning Thorns, namely editing. But I do want to work on building up my platform more and finding some potential literary agents/publishers whilst editing. I need you guys to keep me accountable though because I always say I’m going to do these things and then never, ever get around to them. So any advice and/or yelling at me to get around to it would be amazing!

3.) Tell us about your top-priority writing projects for this year!

Whoops. I seem to have already done that. But in case you missed it. EDITING BURNING THORNS. (And if you’re new here (hello there! *waves*) and have no clue what BT is, you can check out the My Stories page for a blurb. But basically it’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling that involves an overly talkative heroine, a dragon (sorta), a mischievous fae boy, and deadly fairies. Because who wants a lovey-dovey romance story with no man-eating fae? Psssh. Boring.

4.) How do you hope to improve as a writer? Where do you see yourself at the end of 2017?

To be more motivated to actually seriously work towards getting published!
As I keep saying, I never get around to researching literary agents and things. And have only just started editing something instead of flitting off to yet another monstrous first draft that’ll sit in the dark corners of my laptop to the end of time, probably growling at me for abandoning it.
How do I want to see myself at the end of the year? With a nearly perfected version of Burning Thorns and at least a list of literary agents. And possibly a query letter all ready to send to said list of literary agents.
Also a bigger following on my social media would be great. But my ability to keep up with things is always questionable. >.>

5.) Describe your general editing process.

HA. Well, since I’ve only done one serious edit before, and I tend to change up how I do things with every single new writing project, this answer is bound to change. But if you want a super detailed, long version of how I edited Burning Thorns specifically, you can check out THIS POST. But to sum it up…

  • I read through the document and put in notes all over it on things I want to change from typos all the way to giant plot problems.
  • I set up a fresh document to be properly formatted. (Never underestimate the importance of formatting!)
  • I then put my first draft next to my new formatted document and then retype every. single. word. Yes, it took a long time, but it helped SO. MUCH. Highly recommended! Instead of going through walls of text, you’re retyping everything, seeing it fresh, and more likely to actually change things as needed since, you know, you’re retyping anyway. Trust me, it’s fantastic!
  • I retyped it all a chapter at a time, editing as I went.
  • COFFEE. Coffee everywhere.
  • When I finished up a chapter, I’d do another read through of it and then sent it off to my beta-readers.
  • Repeat.

6.) On a scale of 1-10, how do you think this draft turned out?

Are we talking about BT’s first draft? Or it’s current draft? Um um um. I DON’T KNOW. It’s hard judging your own work! Although, this was the best draft I’ve ever written. Even it’s first draft wasn’t atrocious like most of my first drafts (which may be why I didn’t mind editing too much). I’d say the first draft would probably be a…6? And the current second draft a 7? 8? 7 and a half? I have no idea! I’m pretty happy with it, moreso than any story I have, but it still definitely needs more work. Speaking of which…

7.) What aspect of your draft needs the most work?

I’d say the worldbuilding.
Which is usually my answer for all my stories. Worldbuilding is my weakness. In BT, the fae especially didn’t get much in the way of details. And the world itself could use some more history and explanation. But each time I work on it, it gets more and more detailed. So, hopefully, by its next few drafts the worldbuilding will be much more detailed and rich. One can dream anyway. Right? Yes? Maybe?

8.) What do you like the most about your draft?

The characters! And I will repeat myself and say that’s usually my answer for all my stories. *grins* Where I lack in worldbuilding, I think I make up for in character building. I could spend all my life creating characters. People is my specialty. How they think, why they do the things they do, what makes them tick. Just…PEOPLE. I love ‘em! And I do so love my BT cast. From sweet, talkative Rose, to the broken Dragon, to the impish Larke, to the bratty and ridiculous Marigold. Even Anya, in all her wickedness, found her way into my heart. I cannot wait to start editing again just to destroy their lives more spend more time with them. Ahem, yes.

9.) What are your plans for this novel once you finish editing? More edits? Finding beta readers? Querying? Self-publishing? Hiding it in a dark hole forever?

Probably…more edits. But working toward getting ready to query as well. Unfortunately, before querying comes editing and editing and editing and EDITING. So yes. I foresee lots of editing in my future.
Which may also include hiding in a dark hole forever. #TheWritersLife

10.) What’s your top piece of advice for those just finished writing a first draft?

EAT CAKE.
Because, hello? YOU JUST WROTE A FIRST DRAFT YOU MAGICAL LITTLE BEAN YOU. You deserve alllll the cake! And enjoy the cake and relax because you also need to TAKE A BREAK.
In my experience, writing a first draft drains one’s creative juices to the dregs. Editing takes a lot of energy. If you’ve already used up your energy, and have just spent so much time creating your baby, you’re too close to it and drained to properly tear it apart. Taking a good long break (I’m talking a month or longer) is crucial. Once you’ve stepped back and refilled your creative barrel, you can look at the draft with fresh eyes and renewed energy to make the changes it deserves.
I’m very much learning taking a break from things is one of the most important aspects of the writing life. (As long as you do eventually get back to things. Breaks that go on for too long can actually be damaging, too. It’s all about balance!)
~ ~ ~
*looks up at all my goals and hopes and plans* Well, well, well. It looks like 2017 is going to be quite the year. I’m daunted, but also super excited. Now that I’ve had a proper break, I’m finally feeling ready to really get back into it and get serious with my writing! (See? Breaks are magical things.) I don’t know how much of this I’ll actually accomplish this year, but I am determined to do what I can. I may do another proper Goals for 2017 post later once I’ve gotten my brain back in order and everything more officially figured out. Since I’ve been on break and out of town I’m trying to ease myself back into things right now. BUT I AM EXCITED. And I think 2017 will be a good year. Let’s make it one, shall we?

How is 2017 treating all my dears thus far? What’s your biggest goal (writing or otherwise) for this year? What have you been up to lately? Let us chat about all the things! I HAVE MISSED MY PEEPS.

Happy to have you back, Lauri! *hugs and all the ice cream* <3

BURNING THORNS, OH YES. I'm even more excited for 2017 if Burning Thorns things will be happening because THAT STORY *hugs it to death*. And also I RATE BURNING THORNS AS A TEN. *smacks the silly little seven over the head and happily replaces it with a ten* xD

My biggest goal is to get the first draft of novel-sized Killing Snow done. Just the thought makes me want to hide in a Hobbit hole forever and NEVER ANSWER THE DOOR so that no one can tell me to edit. But my muse would probably end up killing me, so that might not work out too well *shrugs*.

2017 is going to be an EPIC writing year, I can't wait to see all the things you get done! (and if you ever need another round of fresh eyes for Burning Thorns *raises hand and waves it wildly* xD)

My big goal for this year is to finish all the art for my brother's board game and get it kick started. 0_0 Crazy.

And perhaps, just maybe finish the first draft of my Beauty and the Beast retelling… we'll see…

Sounds like you had a lovely 2016 in terms of writing and meeting goals! (I enjoy editing, as well, actually… though sometimes it feels overwhelming or can be tedious, but for the most part, I enjoy it).

Best wishes on all your 2017 goals!!! And welcome back to blogging! I have missed your posts!

Eat cake. Yes. Everyone should follow this brilliant advice. Although I believe when I finished my first draft I just flopped and didn't even have the energy to eat cake.

One of my goals is to get my dystopian trilogy first-draft finished, and at least once over edited, and then…I want to try look for a publisher. EEEEK. *flails* I JUST CAN'T STOP FREAKING OUT AND BEING EXCITED AND AAAAACK. I'd love to be to that point at the end of the year when I can be looking further into that.

Also, if you get that query letter nailed, do tell me how. xD I've been trying to work out what exactly they are and how to write one but I can't get it straight in my head.

Yes! It really varies weirdly. (also probably varies whether it was in NaNo or not :P)

EEEK YES. *dances* That would be the most epic thing ever to have someone else at that same stage as me. IT'S SO EXCITING!!

Ooh thank you! I'll definitely take a look at those. *nods*

Great goals! Editing is daunting but I believe in you! *cheers* That's so crazy that you've been doing NaNo so long! This will be my fourth year.

YES, YOU'RE BACK!! I'm so glad you're feeling refueled and rested, and I can't wait to resume reading your splendid posts!

SHERLOCK SEASON FOUR. THAT WAS DEFINITELY A THING THAT HAPPENED, DEARY ME. I wasn't super impressed by the first two episodes, but thE FINAL PROBLEM OH MY. I think that one has to be one of my very favorites ever, second only to A Scandal in Belgravia.

YES, EDITING FTW. I honestly don't understand why it's not more popular? For the most part, you're just perfecting what you already have, and you don't need to think about creating a ton more content. It's so easy compared to creating a story out of literal nothingness, and it's when your piece gets perfected + pretty!

My biggest goal is definitely to finish up my fairyland/steampunk mashup novel, then make large progress on either my heaven vs. hell novella or my Leonardo da Vinci + Michelangelo modern retelling. OR MAYBE I'LL JUST GET DISTRACTED BY ANOTHER HOST OF SHINY NEW IDEAS THIS YEAR AND GET NOTHING DONE, WHO KNOWS.

Welcome back! You've been missed.

Oh boy, I'm excited to see where 2017 leads! It looks as if you have some good things planned. I really should be getting back to my writing goals, I've been putting them off a bit lately. The good news is that my reading goals have been going along nicely!

Dude, editing is the BEST. I love going back and changing allll the things and making them look closer to how I imagined it. xD I mean, I love my wild first drafts, too, but editing isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

You're back! Hurray! And obviously quite ready to churn out long posts again :).

I have to disagree about Burning Thorns only being a seven. Anything with the power to make readers laugh, cry, scream, and threaten to hit people with frying pans has got to be better than that.

I may or may not have been researching query letters myself. Let me know if you'd like me to send you some of the articles I've collected.

Also have you heard of Kingdom Pen? It's an online community for young Christian writers. I've found it very helpful since joining about a month ago. We have a lot of aspiring authours in our midst, some going for self-publishing and some for traditional. There's also a lot of good advice for people seeking publication.

Here are the two I found most helpful — not that I've had any success with query letters yet, not having submitted any, but I practiced, and these two helped make it easier to figure out what to write and in what order and why:
https://janefriedman.com/query-letters/. This is more background and the things you need and questions to ask yourself than a how-to, but I found it answered a lot of questions I would have had to look up the answers to otherwise.
http://www.agentquery.com/writer_hq.aspx. This site doesn't look terribly professional at first, but I'd seen it recommended on other places with more obvious credibility, and the article evaluated on its own merits turned out not to be bad. It was more of a step-by-step article.
Have fun! 🙂

Yay! You're back! This blog is one of my favorites to read! Even though I don't comment as near as I'd like. Which Doctor is your favorite? Matt Smith is mine but I REALLY love David Tennant. It's the opposite for my sister. Peter Capaldi is good but I was kind of excited when I heard that he's leaving the show (isn't that terrible?!?). Really looking forward to Bill though. Which reminds me: who's your favorite companion? Sorry this comment has turned into a fan girl moment of Doctor Who!

You've returned! Ahhhhhh! (Or at least, that was my reaction when your post showed up on my dashboard. We shan't think of how long ago that was. Now my reaction is…well, still pretty much the same, tbh. XD It's so great having you back!)

Glad your hiatus was so refreshing! It's hard to believe it's over already. I feel like you were just announcing your break, and now you're back already… Time does fly. 🙂

GIRL. I am so, so, SO proud of all your writing accomplishments from 2016! Look at you go! And the thought of you tackling the next round of BT edits is exciting. I just get all warm and fuzzy thinking of those precious charries. Their story will get out there yet!

Research…potential…literary agents?! :DDDDD EEEEK! Like I said, I'm beyond excited about every little step along this road you're taking with BT! *huggles* And writing craft books, and a brand spankin' new Nano… Ah. All these wonderful plans. #4 is making me smile like a Cheshire cat right now.

But heheh, yes, hiding in a dark hole is an attractive option sometimes. I might be at the bottom of one of those cozy holes right now, except it's one of those seasons where life seems to move so fast you can't help but get caught up in the momentum. And so my brain says "DO ALL THE THINGS." (Either I've gone overboard, or I'm simply ambitious with writing goals this year. Heh. Time will tell.)

Anyway! ALL the best with your lovely writing plans this year, Christine! I've got full confidence in you–you're the kind of person who achieves goals (and yet can still take a step back when needed). So you've got this. *sends writerly power-ups*
