Know the Novel – Part One: Introduction {A Writers Linkup}

It is OCTOBER! Which means NaNoWriMo is one. month. away. Which also means, it’s time to bring back my annual writer’s linkup: Know the Novel!

That’s right, guys, National Novel Writing Month is just around the corner. And by that I mean LITERALLY 26 DAYS AWAY. *pauses and politely waits for the screaming to die down*

Ahem.

Gonna be real, I am psyched for this year’s NaNo. I mean, I’m always excited, but I’ve had a novel idea that’s been plaguing me for months now, begging to be written. Be proud of me. I’ve resisted the urge to jump into it so I can work on more pressing matters. BUT THE TIME IS ALMOST HERE. And ohohohoho I. AM. PUMPED!

I imagine many of you have stories you’re itching to get started on, stories demanding your attention. And maybe stories you’d love to tell the world about for that extra boost of motivation. WELL. That’s what Know the Novel is all about!

This is honestly one of my favorite things I do here on the blog, and I am thrilled it is time to bring it back for the 3rd year in a row!

But if you have no clue what I’m talking about (does anyone ever really know what I’m talking about? Do *I* know what I’m talking about???), all the info is below!

Introducing…

KNOW THE NOVEL

WHAT IS KNOW THE NOVEL?

Know the Novel is a 3-part writers linkup series, one for each of these last three months of the year. Each part will feature ten questions you can answer on your own blog (or anywhere else on social media, if you’d like!). The questions will be focusing on different parts of your novel and how the writing is going.

The linkups go as followed:

OCTOBER

  • Part One: Introduction – This month’s questions will be centered on you telling us about your novel! What’s it about? Who are the characters? Have the plot bunnies eaten your soul? We readers want to know!

NOVEMBER

  • Part Two: Within the WIP – These questions focus on how the writing itself is going. Has your novel thrown you some surprises? Any problem areas? Have you decided to just kill off all your characters because they’re driving you crazy? This is when we pull back the curtain and reveal all the joys and, let’s face it, disastrous, caffeine-induced word-vomits that writing really involves. You know you love it.

DECEMBER

  • Part Three: It Is WrittenAh, December! When we get to take a breath, realize the laundry pile has eaten the floor…and the furniture…and maybe the dog, and say WE WROTE A NOVEL. This month’s questions are all about how it went! The victories, the hardships, and what your plans are for you newly drafted novel!

In Summary…

For three months, I’ll throw ten novel/writing-related questions your way, you can take the questions and answer them on your own blog, and then share your link in the linkup I’ll attach below so others can read about your delicious novel-y goodness! ‘TIS A FUN TIME.

QUICK NOTE: I am doing this during National Novel Writing Month season since, ya know, a lot of us are doing NaNo. BUT. You DO NOT have to be participating in NaNoWriMo to join the linkup! You can answer these questions for any WIP you have. It’s all just for fun and to help us share and encourage one another in all our writerly endeavors. I adore seeing what all my fellow writers are cooking up, so whether you’re doing NaNo or not, please do take the questions if you want and answer them for any WIP you have!

Alrighty! Now that we know what’s going on here, let’s get to the linkup!

KNOW THE NOVEL PART ONE: INTRODUCTION

I’d be honored if you used this graphic or the banner at the top of this post for your posts, but it’s certainly not required!

THE QUESTIONS

1. What first sparked the idea for this novel?

2. Share a blurb (or just an overall summary if you’d prefer)!

3. Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects about the setting?

4. Tell us about your protagonist(s).

5. Who (or what) is the antagonist?

6. What excites you the most about this novel?

7. Is this going to be a series? standalone? something else?

8. Are you plotting? pantsing? plansting?

9. Name a few unique elements about this story.

10. Share some fun “extras” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

SHARE YOUR LINK

Now for the important bit: ADDING YOUR LINK!

Once your post is published, share the URL in the linkup widget below so we can all read about your fantabulous upcoming WIP!

Part 1 of the linkup ends at midnight on October 31st. Part 2 will go live Monday, November 2nd!

I hope you’re all excited about the 3rd annual Know the Novel! I AM!!! Being able to read about everyone’s absolutely epic WIPs is one of the highlights of my year! Cannot wait to see what your beautiful, creative brains are formulating this year!

And yes, I shall be answering these questions myself later in the month. Once I, ya know, make some sense of my scattered plot notes I’ve been tossing around since March. Yeah, this novel has been plaguing me for a while. I cannot wait to tell you about it! *grins* In the meantime, you can find my NaNo profile HERE if you want to buddy me. Which I would absolutely love!

I seriously cannot believe NaNo will be here in less than a month. But I am EXCITED!!!

LET’S TALK!

Obviously the most important question here is: ARE YOU DOING NANOWRIMO THIS YEAR??? Can you believe it’s so close? Are you excited Know the Novel is back? Don’t forget to add your links to the linkup above if you join! I cannot wait to see everyone’s WIPs!

AHHHH I FORGOT THIS WAS A THING!! I’ll have to do this ASAP when I get home! Also, I’m not doing NaNo the traditional way, per se, because I’m in a writing group for Christian girls and that camp is open right now! We’re all just warming up though, pretty much, because the challenge runs from October 15 to November 15.

Alright, so I have it typed up…for the most part. I’m actually going to be posting it next week, because this week is full of Five Fall Favorites…oh whatever, I’ll just do it tonight. xD

Eeeeeeeep! Know the Novel season is always so much fun!

I’m planning on doing NaNo this year, though it will be revisions (unless by some unforeseen burst of writing speed, I finish this draft of TTS before November, which is…unlikely). I’m excited though! NaNo is usually inspiring and motivating, and after so many years, *not* participating just seems really strange, hehe.

Oooh, this sounds so fun! Not sure I can participate ’cause I don’t have a blog or social media platform, but I definitely can’t wait to read everyone else’s WIPs! I might even have to dust off some of my old story ideas and work on them. 🙂

Thank you so much! I’ll have to keep that offer in mind if I get any progress done! 😀

I love this linkup! And I’m excited to read everyone’s submissions!
I’m not doing NaNo this year–November is CRAZY for school (midterms, argh) and other things. And I don’t actually like sharing any details about my WIPs–it kills my inspiration for some reason. So, while this is one of my favorite linkups to read, I sadly won’t be participating this year.
But maybe once my WIPs are a little further along, I’ll join in next year! 😀

I can’t wait to see everyone’s posts! I always enjoy learning about everyone’s novels they’re planning. I’m not sure if I’m going to participate in NaNo or not? I’m going to be REALLY busy this November, but on the other hand I do have an outline ready to go, so…? I might just set a personal, lower goal for myself.

I literally never do NaNo anymore because I’m always too busy, but seeing this is back made me smile so big. I can’t wait to participate with another one of my severely abandoned novels that is begging for my attention😂💛

October 5, 2020 6:45 PM

Oooh, I’d love to do this link-up, though I don’t think I can do the last part, since I have a feeling I won’t be finished with my draft by December. We’ll see.
I won’t be doing NaNo this year. I want to focus on my studies. Though maybe next year. Who knows?

Oh, cool! I think I’ve seen Know Your Novel linkup before but I didn’t remember the third part questions (I have looked them up now 🙂 ). That’s totally awesome I can do that part without finishing my novel. I want to do the linkup even more. I was already really excited so… I am definitely going to do it some time soon, is what I mean.

YIPPEEE SKIPPEEE – THE “KNOW THE NOVEL” TAG IS BACK!! *throws confetti in the air* I love these. These tags are seriously soooo helpful to your writing buddies, Christine – thank you for all the inspiration you give us. And YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKK – I can’t wait to hear more about your novel. My Novembers just wouldn’t be the same without your writerly enthusiasm and Nano updates!

Honestly this is something I’m gonna look forward to every year from now on xD I have no idea how much writing I’ll actually get accomplished, and right now I’m still kinda on the fence about which story to go for, but I really really hope I can participate in this tag!!

I’m flipping back and forth on wanting NaNo to start NOW and wanting like 26×10 days to keep planning. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M DOING YET. It’s either one plan or another… and both happen to be NaNo rebel plans. *shrugs* What can I say? I’m a natural-born rebel, it seems like. I don’t think I’ve done a brand new novel for NaNo since… 2013 when I began Secret of the Hazel Tree? Yikes. And we all know *that* wasn’t finished in a month. 😛

I love this idea. I’ve been struggling to write my novel for months now because I feel like my writing sucks but I love NaNoWrimo and this would be my first year participating. This link up seems awesome!! I’m definitely participating!

EEP!!! IT’S BAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!
In all honesty, I still can’t believe it’s basically time for another NaNo. O_o But yay! So excited for the return of these posts! AND wait—THREE YEARS??!? No way!!! That’s amazing. <3

I hope to join in on this linkup in the next week or two, but honestly not sure if I'll make NaNo this year or not—though I seriously hope to!! We shall see. But GURRRRRRL—I simply canNOT wait to hear about your story for this NaNo!!!! You've got me so intrigued!!!!

MEEEP!! Oh my goodness, I am SO excited about this!! I’m not sure I’ve ever participated in Know The Novel before (I think I tried one year, but then NaNo ate my soul and blog posts were a no go, as it typically happens. XD) but THIS YEAR. THIS YEAR I AM DOING ALL THREE OF THESE. And if I fail please kindly come to my house and slap me upside the head with a soft pillow. XD

And EEEEP! I am so so SO excited for NaNoWriMo this year!! I’m gonna be a bit of a rebel, but it’s going to be AMAZING. MWAHAHAHAHAHA! I can’t wait to read about your story!!! I actually came here first from your Introduction post, so I’m gonna bop back over there and read about all of the delicious story-ish-ness!!!!!!

YEEEEEESSS, Know the Novel is back!!! This is such a great linkup, and I LOVE that you’re doing it again this year! And I’ve been looking forward to learning about your own NaNo project! *scarpers off to read post*

I’m only a day late! Between work and actually doing the NaNoWriMo prep, it took the last minute push of it actually being November for me to finish it. But thanks to you, i do have a halfways decent blurb now, so that’s the plus side.
