The time has come at last! A time for fun, chaos, mischief, and most importantly, gathering all the fantasy nerds together to celebrate BOOK CHARACTERS. That is right, o friends and fae, it is time once more for…
THE SILMARIL AWARDS!
My love and excitement for this season have no bounds. I cannot believe another year has rolled around. And what’s more, this will be the seventh annual Silmaril Awards. INSANITY. I’ll be a host for my fourth year in a row, which is such a joy and honor.
If you’re unsure what this even is, no fears, my good friend! I am here to give you all the details so you can jump right into the excitement yourself.
What Are The Silmaril Awards?
Some seven years ago, the ever brilliant and notable Jenelle Schmidt and DJ Edwardson joined forces to fill a tragic emptiness in the world—a lack of recognition of countless literary fantasy characters. Certainly, many fantasy characters gain much love from readers, but shouldn’t there be a place for these readers to get together and shout to the world of their love? Shouldn’t these characters, in all that they do, receive true recognition on public display?
Jenelle and DJ certainly thought so. And thus they formed…
The Silmaril Awards!
This delightfully fun blogging event is a form of an awards show, but with one key difference from your run-of-the-mill awards: the nominees are literary fantasy characters.
YES. If you’ve ever wanted to shout to the world about your favorite characters from fantasy books, this is the place to do it! And if they get enough nominees and votes, they may go home with a coveted silmaril claiming that they are truly worthy.
How Does It Work?
There are different categories (Most Epic Hero, Most Faithful Friend, Wisest Counselor, etc.) hosted across the presenters’ blogs. In the comments, you get to nominate and second (or third, fourth, fifth, etc.) the character(s) YOU believe deserves to win said category. Once the week is up, we hosts will tally the nominations, and the top 5 characters with the most seconds move on to the voting round! After voting, we will then share award ceremonies in which we reveal who got the most votes and wins the most coveted (and shiny) Silmaril in our chosen category!
- WEEK 1: Nominations – Sept. 5 – 9
This week is where most of the action on your part takes place (and is just FUN!) In the comments of each host’s blog, you can go in and nominate whatever literary fantasy characters you’d like for that particular category, with no limit to how many! You can also second any of the ones others have nominated.
This is also a fantastic time to make new fantasy-loving friends and find more books to add to your TBR. (Cause we all need those right? *nervous laugh*) My TBR rises at least half a mile with every Silmaril Awards, not gonna lie… But we loves it, preciousss! Do not hold back on all the fantasy book geeking out. We want to hear all about your favorite books and characters!
Nominations close at midnight Friday night/Saturday morning CST.
- WEEK 2: Voting – Sept. 12 – 16
We will be closing nominations at midnight Friday the 9th so we can then tally up all nominations and seconds over the weekend. The top 5 characters in each category who receive the most seconds will move on to the voting round! At this time, we’ll provide a quick and easy voting form for you all to fill in.
Well, the voting form is easy to use. Actually choosing just one character in each category is a different story altogether…
- WEEK 3: Awards Ceremonies – Sept. 19 – 30
With nominations and voting done, we will all, at last, get to see the results, and whew boy is there much jubilation to be had. And chaos. So much chaos.
Once the votes are in, over the course of two weeks we hosts will be providing ceremonies across our respected blogs revealing the winners for our chosen category! And these aren’t some humdrum award shows. Fantasy characters are involved. (I did mention chaos, right?) To top the fun, each category ceremony is presented by a Tolkien character!
YEP.
So do get ready for some fantasy character mayhem and shenanigans.
To sum up…
You will toss the names of literary fantasy characters down in the comments of each blog if you think those characters fit the hosts’ chosen category. If the characters you want to nominate already have a nomination, you can second them. After a week of this, we hosts tally the seconds to the top five. You will then vote for these top five. After that, the winners will be announced! It’s super easy and straightforward, I promise. But we do have a few rules in place.
The Rules
1.) Tolkien’s characters are NOT eligible to be nominated. Why? Well, because we believe they are the gold standard of fantasy characters and have already won by default. We have to give some other characters their chance in the sun, yes? But never fear! Tolkien’s beloved characters will still be given chances to shine as they will be the presenters of the awards.
2.) Characters from LITERARY FANTASY ONLY can be nominated. Book characters only, please. Characters exclusively from TV series, movies, and video games are ineligible. We also ask that the book is, in fact, fantasy. So no sci-fi, dystopian, etc. With that said, sometimes defining the exact genre of a book can be difficult. If you can make a strong case as to why you believe your chosen book is considered fantasy, do share and we hosts will discuss it!
3.) We ask you to NAME THE BOOK the character you’re nominating is from. Alas and alack, we hosts have not, in fact, read every fantasy story out there (A TRAVESTY I KNOW). So it is immensely helpful if we know the title and author of said book.
4.) There are NO LIMITS TO NOMINATIONS OR SECONDS. Obviously you can’t second a character more than once, but you can second as many characters as you like across the categories. So be freeee, my preciouses! Remember, the TOP FIVE characters in each category with the most seconds make it onto the voting round. So don’t hold back! Nominate and second with abandon. We hosts love to see our comment sections positively explode. It’s great. XD
5.) With that said, AUTHORS CANNOT NOMINATE THEIR OWN CHARACTERS. Now, should you desire to kindly remind your readers of said awards and not-so-subtly hint that your characters qualify, that’s a different story entirely. *smile, smile* But a book does have to be published to qualify.
6.) PREVIOUS WINNERS CANNOT BE NOMINATED AGAIN. These coveted Simarils are Lifetime Awards. So if a character has received one in the past, they cannot be greedy and claim it again. BUT. You CAN nominate them for ANOTHER category they’ve not won in. You can find the full list of PAST WINNERS on the website.
7.) HAVE FUN AND PROSPER! The most important rule of them all: enjoy yourself! These awards are all about sharing the love of our favorite characters, discovering new reads, making new friends, and just having a wild time of fun and epicness. It is going to be GRAND.

With that out of the way…
My Category
I am joining this amazing team of hosts for the fourth year in a row, and what an honor it is! For my first year, I bravely hosted the Least Competent Henchmen and I’m sure you can imagine how that ended up. My second year saw me hosting the Most Mischievous Imps which may have been even more chaotic. At least henchmen aren’t trying to cause mayhem unlike certain imps I know… >.> My third year was a glorious time in which I got to fulfill my dream. Hosting the Most Magnificent Dragons! I mean sure, they nearly burned my house down but worth it.
(Oh yeah, did I mention we hosts have to house every. single. nominee? Yeppp.)
For once, this year may, at last, be calmer on my end of things.
For this seventh annual Silmaril Awards I shall be hosting the category for…
SILVER TONGUE
Yes indeedy!
Instead of woefully incompetent, wildly chaotic, or just downright fiery and destructive guests, for the duration of the awards, I shall be hosting the smooth-talkers, the riddle-composers, the poets and witty thinkers and prosy speech makers. Those born with silver slipping effortlessly from their tongues.
I’d love to imagine, for once, this will mean days of riddles and tea at my house but…oh, who am I kidding? Silver tongues are just as bad as imps. Maybe even worse, because they’re clever about their mischief.
Good thing I love me some havoc…
Previous Winners for this Category:
- 2021 Westley from The Princess Bride
- 2020 Eanrin from Tales of the Goldstone Wood
- 2019 Lady of the Green Kirtle from The Chronicles of Narnia
- 2018 Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle
- 2017 Mo from Inkheart
- 2016 The Sorting Hat from The Harry Potter Series
That means these six characters CANNOT be nominated for this particular category as they have already won their lifetime Silmarils. (But can I invite Westley, Eanrin, and Howl over anyway?? Pleeeease.)

Nominate your favorite Silver Tongues below!

I SECOND CURDIE!!!! I’m so glad mah boi is getting noticed!
I second Bonnie, Kiernan, and Leonard!
I know he’s not well-known, but I have to nominate Friend Rat from The Oneprince. My beloved Rat is the closest advisor to the King and uses both logic and humor to guide people into the correct choice. He doesn’t care whether you are a man, a talking animal, or a bush with delusions of grandeur… if he thinks you are on acting on false logic, he will take time out of his busy day to set you straight (or at least attempt to… ultimately it’s up to you if you want to continue against wise counsel).
Alas, I have never heard of this character but he sounds AMAZING! I need to check this out! 😀
I’ve gotta say, this is a BRILLIANT idea!! *rubs hands together*
Jaron from Ascendance Series (definitely fits the “witty thinker” XD)
Mum Olga from Ella Enchanted (definitely a “smooth talker”)
Ella from Ella Enchanted (witty thinker)
Caleb from 100 Cupboards (THE ELOQUENCE!! OY!)

Oooh, such great choices! I’ve yet to read the Ascendance series, much to my great shame! But you can NEVER go wrong with Ella Enchanted and 100 Cupboards was a ton of fun as well.
I second Ella!
Oh yes, I second Jaron!
Good luck, Christine! Silver Tongues are no match for you. You’ll show them all how it’s done! 😉
I nominate:

Oh, I will second Calcifer!
^^^ I also second Calcifer
I second Miryem and Calcifer!
I second Miryem and Calcifer
I appreciate the confidence! Hopefully they won’t talk me out of house and home… I’m going to make a lot of good food to keep their mouths occupied. You can’t cause too much mischief with speech if your mouth is always full, right??
OH BOY. Calcifer is joining the party! I’m both excited and worried. I mean, what if he burns the BACON? D: (Also I adore the idea of Howl learning his smooth speech from Calcifer. That is an AMAZING thought, oh my goodness. XD)
I second Calcifer!

I second Miryem!

I second Lord Vetinari and Moist von Lipwig.
I second Kiernan, Truesilver, Ella, and Athelas

Seconding Aza.
Awwww, Aza and Miri are such lovely picks! <3
This will be a fun year I’m sure! (I just barely missed last year’s one, and I’m really sad about that… but at least I made it to this year’s one! 😀 )
Hopefully your house will not be so wrecked this time… let’s hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
alas, I wish I could nominate Touchstone from Shakespeare’s play As You Like it, but that would technically be fiction and not fantasy. Perhaps, in my honor, you should read it, though? 😉 (And I do think it counts as a book, sort of.)
Aside from that, I can’t think of any nominations I would like, but I’ll certainly scroll through all the other comments! Best of luck on keeping your house tidy, and your mind from going insane from (I’m sure) all the talking that will be going on!
Faramir
I’m so sad you missed out last year, but ECSTATIC you are here to join the party this year!!! 😀
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst… Yep, that sounds like a solid plan. I already have quite a mix of guests here. So I think it’s gonna get PRETTY interesting around here for a while.
Ah yeah, I don’t think Shakespeare would count, as it is a play and not a novel, per se. And I need to brush up on my Shakespeare! I read some of it when I was in my teens but goodness it’s been a WHILE. I’ve forgotten so much! I definitely need to give it all a reread!
Well hey, if you think of any, you have until Friday night to share them!
Thanks, Faramir! I lost my sanity ages ago, so I should be good. ;D
This was such a fun category to host last year!!!

I second Coren, Isabella, and Burndee!
I second Mat Cauthon and Isabella!
(As a note, Athelas was nominated further up.)
yeah yeah… it counts as a second if it’s already happened. LOL (Or if one leaves all their tabs open for 24 hours and doesn’t hit “refresh” before commenting so it looks on my end like I’m one of the first commenters only to discover later that I’m the last LOL) 😉
😆
Seconding Tanwen!
Seconding Vizini!
Seconding Coren!
Seconding Keefe and Vizzini!
I second Keefe, Coren, Tanwen, and Vizzini
I am REALLY excited about this category. It’s a lot different from the ones I’ve done previously and am I getting QUITE the mix of guests. I love it! 😀
These are all such fun picks! (Although having Vizzini around is going to be interesting.) I couldn’t be more pleased Isabella is joining the party! And BURNDEE. What a fun idea! See, my plan is to just keep a continuous pile of food on hand because if everyone’s mouths are full they can’t cause any mischief with their tongues. So maybe Burndee can help me feed everyone!
(Also I counted your nominations for Athelas and Fflewddur Fflamm as seconds. No problem!)
Second for Burndee!!
I second Burndee!!

Did you mean Azreal? There is also an Asterope. But I assume you’re talking about Azreal? He is fabulous!
Astryn was the icy chap in Paper Crown, actually! Until seeing Azrael, Asterope, and Astryn all in the same comments like this I didn’t realize how many “A” names there were in Paper Crowns! XD
OOOOH. ASTRYN. I remember him now! Man, it’s been so long, I totally forgot. And yeah, all those A names tripped me up. XD But yes, I know who we’re talking about now. Thank you for the clarification!
Ooh, I second Astryn!

The Conjurer (Magic, by GK Chesterton)
Aww, dear Puddleglum does have a way with words! Seconding him!
Seconding Puddleglum!
Love you trying to balance out some of this craziness! *grins* Though due to The Screwtape Letters being spiritual fiction, not fantasy, I’m afraid Screwtape won’t qualify for these awards. And I believe the Chesterton one is more a play, not a novel? In which case that would not qualify either.
I’m not familiar with The Nicholas Book and can’t find any information. Can you elaborate on it?
Oh, I forgot! I also nominate the Narrator of the Princess Bride (I did that once before, and it was fun). Also Fezzik and Inigo (as a duo or separately, I don’t mind).

DID I MENTION ATHELAS THO
And I’m too late for him to get any traction with seconds, I’m sure, but I’d like to acknowledge Artemis Fowl (from the bOOKS *shakes fist*) with a nomination xD
I feel like there are a few names I’m recognising here from nominations on my Counselor post… and others from the Villains (and sometimes… both??), so that’s interesting!
I am absurdly pleased with the Athelas love going around. Absurdly. And Calcifer is DEFINITELY making his rounds which also pleases me greatly. I guess he doesn’t want to be outdone by Howl.
Oooh, Artemis Fowl is a great one though!
It is so funny how some of the same characters are being nominated for many different things. Some characters just have ALL the skills.
I second:
Curdie
Caleb and Frank
Puddleglum
