Know the Novel 2022: Part 1 // Introducing Dawn’s Fractured Light

My FallFicFrenzy writing challenge begins at midnight Friday night! *cue the shrieking* Which means in less than a week I’ll be slipping away into my little writing hollow and may not emerge for a good number of weeks. But, of course, I must first introduce what shall be consuming every waking hour for the next while.

I’ll be answering the prompts from my Know the Novel tag which opened its doors last week and I’d love for you to join. More info in the actual post. *points to link below*

Find out more and join the linkup HERE!

I rather suspect most of you can take a good guess on what I’ll be writing this year. And yes, I am very, VERY excited.

Introducing…

DAWN’S FRACTURED LIGHT

(Fragmented Worlds #3)

Mock cover made purely for fun

My Daystars are returning for the third year in a row and my goodness have I missed my disaster children. This series I started in NaNoWriMo 2020 not only reawakened my love for writing after a dry spell, it rapidly became one of (if not my top) favorite stories I’ve ever created. It’s got such a huge mix of things I love and a wildly disastrous and crazy fun cast to go along with it.

Even when not working on it, this story is pretty much 24/7 running in the back of my mind and has carried me through a couple of extremely hard years. It’s the story I needed in this season of my life, and no matter what happens with it, I’ll always be grateful for that.

And this year? This year I’m writing the finale! Which both thrills me and gets me all emotional.

WELL. I’m mostly certain this will be the finale. From the start, I always wondered if it’d turn into a 4-book series, but at this point, I’m pretty sure I can wrap it up in this third one. Which means this is going to be one doozy of a book to attempt to write in a month. But I am EXCITED.*

*If not a tad overwhelmed but it’s fiiiine.

ANYWAY. Let’s get on with the questions!

What first sparked the idea for this novel?

The original idea came from a dream. A dream about BBC’s Merlin, actually, which is hilarious to think about now because this isn’t medieval fantasy or anything close to Merlin. But hey, ideas gotta come from somewhere.

Over time the idea exploded and refused to leave me alone for months on end. Seriously, this concept plagued me for like the majority of 2020, so by the time NaNo rolled around I was so ready to start writing it.

The biggest source of inspiration is actually the Kingdom Hearts video game franchise (with a touch of Final Fantasy thrown in), my great obsession for 20 years and counting. I’ve pretty much wanted to write a book with that same sort of unique fantasy vibe for well over half my life. Apparently, 2020 was the time to finally do it.

Other great loves came into play as well. Such as #squadgoals and found family, a love for ballet I’ve always harbored but never got to fulfill, people with wings, and absurdly complex plots that make even my brain spin. Because I gotta be extra like that, I guess.

It’s just this wild compilation of obsessions I’ve had most of my life, while still being exceedingly different from anything I’ve ever written, and I love it to pieces.

Share a blurb (or just an overall summary)!

LOL. Any attempts at a blurb for this book specifically would be hugely spoilery, so let me see if I can sort of summarize this bizarre trilogy of mine…

17-year-old Aelin lives in Chethral, a world in which its southernmost parts were wiped away by the Nothing—an unknown source that eats away all of existence and leaves a void in its place. But more cracks of Nothing appear frequently, ever growing and threatening to vanquish the world completely and releasing dangerous shadowed creatures known as undrig from within. Only the Sealers, with their special magic activated by dancing, can seal away the fissures and keep the monsters at bay.

Aelin wants nothing more than to aid in assuring the world is safe, so it is a dream come true when she finds a friend in Princess Dayana Zahar, a Sealer herself, and joins the ranks as one of Day’s two Watchers, special guards who fight the undrig back whilst the Sealer dances the cracks together.

She also befriends Rune, Day’s other Watcher, Tala, the healer, and Prince Kezrin. Together, they form the Daystars, a seemingly unstoppable and inseparable team. That is until, one night, Chethral is nearly swallowed whole in endless cracks and winged people from another world appear from the Nothing and steal the people away.

Because the universe is far bigger than they ever imagined, and the Nothing is much more than a void of emptiness… In the midst of impossible secrets and insurmountable odds, the Daystars must face the shadows and fight to make their world whole again.

Well, that’s just one big ol’ disastrous word salad right there. Maybe one day I’ll find some concise way to explain this peculiar tale. Clearly, it is not this day.

Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects of the setting?

I suspect there will be quite a number of locations in this finale, we may even see some different worlds we’ve yet to visit. Not quite sure about that, but it is definitely a possibility.

The main location will be Thexion, the world of the winged people. More specifically, Kelsindor, the capital, which is a grand metropolitan city of enormous white buildings, gleaming paved streets, airships and trams and other fancy technology, and floating buildings (another random love of mine), many of which are connected by intricate bridges. If anyone is extra in this story, it’s the inhabitants of this world. They like the grand and over-the-top.

I mean I do too. Kelsindor may be the city of my dreams aesthetic-wise don’t judge.

We will also probably be visiting some peculiar places that will be…mmm…let’s say a little outside of the physical universe, if you will. But that’s getting into spoiler territory. *smile, smile*

To address my favorite aspects… That’s a tough one. A lot of what we’ll be seeing in this book I’ve yet to explore, so I can’t quite say. Though I have had vague impressions of certain things in my mind for a good two years now and I am most looking forward to finally visiting it all officially.

But I definitely love me that grandness of Kelsindor…and the dark secrets hidden beneath its shiny exterior. *grins and creeps back into the shadows*

Tell us about your protagonist(s).

This will be the third year in a row I’m sharing about this chaotic crew so I should probably just link you guys to my Know the Novel posts from 2020 and 2021 and not repeat myself buuuut if this is the finale GO BIG OR GO HOME.

(I also just love talking about them so absurdly much. Thank you all for indulging me.)

AELIN

ENFP | chaos and cuteness and curiosity | also stabby | insecurities for days but rarely shows it | action first, think later | actually just leave the thinking to Day | everyone: “don’t do the Thing!” Aelin: “I may have already done the Thing” | I just met you and I love you | please stop and take a nap, Aelin | explosions are cool | reckless loyalty | will take on an entire army single-handedly if it means protecting her loved ones | childlike but like…with knives | but also loves pretty things | considered the sunshine of the group

PRINCESS DAYANA “DAY”

INTJ | Sealer | way too many burdens | looks fabulous 24/7 | deadly eyebrow raise | I’m surrounded by idiots | would actually die for her idiots | such grace, such poise | also needs a nap | books are better than people | insults people but like elegantly | appears inapproachable and ethereal | is actually fiercely loyal, loving, and longs for deep connections

PRINCE KEZRIN “KEZ”

ISTP | feelings are dumb | has way too many feelings | snark is the only proper form of communication | reckless | shares precisely one (1) braincell when with his bestie Rune | why wear other colors when black exists?? | d r a m a | please leave me alone (jk don’t leave me) | ugh responsibility | I’m always right | actually makes stupid decisions for days | emo child | definitely, definitely needs a nap

TALA

ISFJ | ultimate Mom Friend | you get a new knitted pair of socks and you get a new pair of socks and | cookies make everything better I promise | if a warm blanket was a person | but don’t make mama bear angry | literally the only voice of reason | please everybody just listen to Tala | is terrified of change | Rune is my person | down to earth | so, so done with all this nonsense | I’m just gonna adopt everyone and solve the world’s problems with love and tea | may be the only one? who sleeps?? regularly???

RUNE

ENFP | playful and awkward | puppy dog personified | except a puppy dog with a knife | yes I can kill you in one deft movement but can’t we just hug it out?? | I love all of you but Tala is my favorite | “I have done nothing wrong, ever, in my life” “we know this, and we love you” | I’ll adopt all the animals in the entire universe pleaseandthankyou | what do you mean there are more important things than food?! | so much loyalty and love

Thus I give you my Daystars. I cannot wait to return to these disaster children, guys. CANNOT WAIT.

And if you’re wondering if they’ll ever get a nap… Mmm. Probably not.

Naturally, there are a looot of other characters into play. Three particularly ones will get some pretty big roles in this final book and I am absurdly excited about it because, honestly, I’ve grown to love them just as much as the original 5, buuut I can’t spill all the beans, now can I? *smiles*

Who (or what) is the antagonist?

Funnily enough, it wasn’t until book #2 that I officially met the Ultimate Baddie who proved to be…interesting. But it would be far too spoilery to divulge in that.

I actually have multiple antagonists in play and it’s going to be interesting balancing them all in this one because things have changed and let’s just say they’re not all exactly of one mind.

I will say that basically all of my villains are Drama Queens of the highest order and so, so Extra. They’re not exactly ones to hide in the shadows. They make themselves known and look fabulous doing it. And I love them for it.

But also I really, really hope Certain People get stabbed. It’s high time they got stabbed. >.>

What excites you the most about this novel?

Goodness me, so many thiiings! The fact that this is (probably) the finale means that everything is coming to a headway. All the plot threads, all the relationships, all the disasters and plot twists and character arcs and random climatic scenes I’ve had rolling around in my head for ages are reaching their peak and it’s surreal to think about.

But, ultimately, I’m excited to return to my Daystars and give them what I hope will be a worthy conclusion.

It’s been a wild, chaotic, amazing journey drafting these books, and I cannot wait to do it one more time.

Is this going to be a series? standalone? something else?

The hope is a trilogy, obviously! We’ll see if it becomes too wild and needs one more book to wrap things up…

Why oh why must I write such absurdly complex and lengthy stories? WHY?!

Are you plotting? pantsing? plansting?

Pantsing, mostly! This has definitely been a story I’ve had to discover as I go. There’s just so much to it, and I’ve had to take one scene at a time. (Would you believe I was completely in the dark about the Ultimate Plot for all of book 1 and like half of book 2? Yeah…) But goodness has it been fun. I wouldn’t want to do it any other way.

For this one, I have a faaairly good idea of how I want the very beginning to go down, and some super vague ideas for random middle scenes and some ending stuff (sorta). But otherwise? Yeah, I’m going in blindly.

It’s gonna be fine, right?

…Right?

Name a few unique elements in this story.

I think this series has to be my most unique story yet.

It’s got things like…

  • Magical dancing that stops worlds from being obliviated.
  • Multiple worlds but not in the normal sense. You can’t just get into a spaceship and fly to different planets. They’re all separated in very…complicated ways.
  • A huge blend of fantasy in a more modern setting.
  • Some very peculiar ways of portal traveling.

I don’t know. A lot of the more unique things are huge spoilers, but I’m pretty proud of this one, guys, not gonna lie.

Share some fun “extras” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

Only my favorite things of ever to share! The aesthetics of this one gives me all the heart-eyes. And, honestly, I don’t think I’d be even half as excited about this story if not for its playlist. That thing keeps me going.

AESTHETICS

loyalty and love | darkness and light | shoving back the shadows | broken seams, broken hearts | fight to the very end | worlds asunder | feathers | flames | paths of light | falling, flying | finding the stars in the dark nights | sharp blades and wits | determination | unbreakable bonds | sacrifice | who are the real monsters | shattered glass | beauty in the scars | keep dancing, keep dancing, keep dancing

– Pinterest Board –

My beautiful, beautiful board that I spent way too much time on but have zero regrets about.

– Playlist –

Also a huge time consumer but, as I said, basically my biggest source of inspiration. And also my biggest playlist ever with 100+ songs and counting. Most of it is instrumental music (tons of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy soundtrack pieces because the music from those games is king) and it’s all somewhat organized to fit certain “moods” (like I have a highly emotional section, a battle songs section, etc.) so I can just hit the song on the top of that “section” and the next multiple songs will fit whatever scene I’m writing at the time. But I do have a very choice few lyrical songs at the bottom if that’s more your thing. And by a “few” I mean like…4. I tend to write better with instrumental pieces, so yeah. XD

And there is my bizzaro story in a nutshell. Writing this third book is going to be wild, guys. Absolutely wild. I’m feeling both overwhelmed and abuzz with anticipation. The good news is, I have a bit of extra time to write it this go round since I’m not doing NaNo and instead starting my own FallFic challenge on October 15th. I very much hope to be done by December, so this way if it takes me longer than a month, it won’t run straight into December. Because I kind of suspect this one may take me half of October and all of November. *nervous laughter* But we’ll see!

Speaking of FallFic… It’s not too late to join! If you missed it, the Fall Fiction Writing Frenzy a.k.a FallFicFrenzy is basically an alternate version of Camp NaNo starting on October 15th and running to November 15th. We have an exclusive Discord group to gather and motivate one another and, like Camp NaNo, you’re welcome to come with any writing project and goal you have!

If you want to join the Discord group, toss me an email at Lauriloth(at)gmail(dot)com and I’ll happily send you an invite. (You’re welcome to join any time throughout the challenge!)

Annnd if you want to answer these Know the Novel prompts on your blog and join the linkup, you can find the info and a clean list of the questions HERE.

One more order of business…

If you’ve been around for a while, you know I usually do weekly writing updates during NaNo in which every Monday you guys get a sleep-deprived, over-caffeinated jumble of nonsense from me as I attempt to share my insane writing ventures from the week. This year will be no different. Except, of course, it’ll be FallFic updates instead of NaNo but the posts themselves will be exactly the same. The only change is that they’ll go up on Saturdays instead of the usual Mondays. Since FallFic lands on a Saturday, I thought I’d change my normal blogging day to then for the course of the challenge so it’ll be ordered into perfect weeks (’cause I’m OCD like that). But rest assured there will, indeed, be the usual weekly roundup of writing insanity from me.

(Seriously, I don’t know how you guys put up with me.)

Expect my next blog post on Saturday, October 22nd in which I will share how the first week of writing ensued!

I cannot believe I’ll be writing in less than a week. But it is the season to create, my friends. The time for late nights and warm drinks and the characters and worlds in our heads coming to life on the page. It is going to be beautiful.

Cheering you all on. Let’s make some stories!

Show of hands! Who’s doing a writing challenge this fall? I’d love to hear about your projects! Or do you have other exciting plans for the season? And what do you think of my own monster of a project? Any and all motivating cookies and coffee would be hugely appreciated.

Don’t forget you can join this linkup yourself HERE!

Yayayay! I’m excited for the writing season!

Remember the first time I showed up at your blog? And I absolutely fawned over Night’s Shattered Stars? It’s time to do a repeat! 😀

(In case you did want a concise summary, I have one: “Almost everybody dances and has fun and saves the world by doing so.” The end of the concise explanation.)

And whee! Your characters are still as delightful as ever! (Though I do prefer sentences above the choking bite size portions that it appears several writers use. 😀 just don’t mind me, I’ll be fine)

Also I love how you’re not so boring with your story (unlike me) and have many, many pictures. I feel like maybe this is related to the fact that I can’t really visualize my characters/setting/etc well enough to find pictures of them that I’m satisfied with. Which is fine, but… yeah I’m a bit boring. XD

And a playlist too! Eeep, you really came prepared!

(I do actually have two playlists. I lied a little.)

Anyways happy writing! Good luck on writing another 100k+ monstrosity like the last few? (Or were there more 100k+ books before that?)

Aw, I’m so glad I can help to make fall writing as fun for as many people as possible!

(Speaking of lying, I do have one picture for my story… I’ve attached it, I have no idea how the attachment on wordpress it works at all, haha. Anyways it’s the semi-inspiration for Farell.)

I think the main reason I don’t find pictures on pinterest is that I find the website way too distracting/hard to maneuver, so I just picture them in my head to save time and brain cells. But I also am a bit boring and leave many, many details fuzzy. I still don’t know what Gray looks like, and there’s a semi-MC that I’ve also skipped over. (But I have heard that keeping some details fuzzy actually helps with reader participation, ending up with a book that people are far less likely to dislike, and character that are more likeable because they can picture them with a profile to their liking.)

I have no idea for my normal book finishing mark. (I do hope it will be over 100k though, as that will be very fun.)

Also, I can’t believe the crazy FFF starts at the end of the week! Eeps!

(Edit: ok, so that’s how wordpress images work. 😀 )

(Edit number two: Also, I wonder what other people think when they go to the comments section of your blog post and see a long string of messages. Lol.)

Of course I’ll update you on how big my book gets! Usually I’d say the prologue is about 1/20 of the story at most – does that sound reasonable? Anyways, I’ve written 1,000 words in the prologue so far, and I’m not half done yet. (I haven’t been focusing on the actual story because I wanted to release an extra on my blog. Yay, exciting foreshadowing! The extra is technically a part of the story, but I’m not sure if I’ll keep it in a book, I’ll just use it as a way for people who are interested to meet the characters and their personalities.) Um, anyways my book is going to be at least 20k words long… Though I do think it’ll be an immense one, as I know there has to be ages in between the plot points I’ve found. (Have you ever thought of writing like a treasure hunt in your brain where you search for the most appealing gem of a plot point?)

Maybe you should release an extra? That would be fun! (You still have two days before Fall Fic Frenzy, you know…)

By the way, I’m aiming about 4k-5k words for my extra, and I’ve written about 2k so far. Not nearly finished. However, I’ll probably finish it by tomorrow.

(I’m so glad you use that widget!!)

(And yes our little (or not so little) chats are wonderful. I doubt anybody minds.)

AHHH CHRISTINE!!! I’m soooo excited you’ll be writing the (likely) finale this year! XD Though I totally get what you mean, since I’m sure it’s bittersweet to see beloved characters go. I just can’t relate at the moment because my book has turned into a series and I’m barely still working on getting the first book done XD

Anyways your upcoming WIP as always sounds AMAZINGGGG. I don’t know how you fantasy writers do it! *dies because I could never write something so creative and complex* I’d say fantasy is my favorite genre to read, but I cannot write it for the life of me. I need facts to write by, which is why all my books are historicals.

Cheering you on this FallFic! 😀 Let the writing craziness begin!

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion Kez will be my favorite character…

I love the sound of this, Christine! Best of luck with your writing this fall!! <3

This sounds amazing! I can’t wait to meet these characters! (Especially the ENFPs, but I’m biased XD) Plus, your setting looks AWESOME. I am down for the Totally Extra vibes!

I’m actually not sure which MBTI types I write most; it would be interesting to see. But INFPs and ENFPs are a couple of my favorites since I’m on the line between the two myself. ;D I do know I’ve had stories where characters end up sharing types, so I totally get that. XD But hey, the more the merrier, I suppose! It can be really interesting to see how those characters click and clash in ways they wouldn’t if they weren’t the same type.

This all sounds amazing and epic and so much fun and aaahhh I’m so excited for you getting to write the finale!!! I loved reading all about this story (so many juicy tidbits! So many fun charactersss and unique concepts!) and GAAHH the aesthetics and pinboard and everything are all–! *heart eyes* *casually snags playlist link and bookmarks for next time I need fantasy music for writing* XD Anyway I’m SO SO EXCITED for FallFic and I hope yours goes AMAZINGLY!!!! I HOPE YOU HAVE A BLAST writing Dawn’s Fractured Light!!! Good luck to youuu! You’ve got this! <3

This sounds so cool! I love that cover…it’s so pretty!
Found family? Say no more, I’m hooked. That’s my very favorite trope.
I love your character descriptions! They all seem very interesting and I appreciate you sharing such detail with us.
I’m just loving the fantasy/ballet/video game aesthetic of this novel. Hurry up and write it so I can read the series one day.🤣

Happy writing! I hope FallFicFrenzy goes well and I will await your next post!

I fell in love with your people and laughed at their descriptions AGAIN! All the heartwarmed feels over these people and their bonds! And the hilarious way you describe them! I’ve got to try doing that again.

I AM Tala, still. When you first introduced her two years ago, everything on the list was SO EXTREMELY ME. I think the only exception was that I was not a plant nerd….I THOUGHT I wasn’t! But I am.
And the only exception this time is that….I dont’ sleep enough, but not by choice. I am still stubbornly lying down consistently every night, even if I only sleep half of it. So in that regard, I’m like the rest of them!

And now that I know a bit more about other personality types…..you’ve given me a small taste for ENFPs to add to my little bit of knowledge.

And I LOVED the window into your personal ISTP character! All the emotions he doesn’t know what to do with…so true. And he thinks he’s always right until he finds out he isn’t.

It’s hilarious to me how he’s such an ISTP and also, in a weird surface way, a lot like my black-clad, emo bad boy, Jason (but my guy is not what you’d think of from my description, and he’s an ENTP). Have you seen this character quote that makes me laugh every time? “maybe you should wear less black.” “maybe you should breathe less air.”

So exciting that you’re reaching the finale of the series!!! Congrats!
I really enjoyed reading about your story. The characters + concept are awesome! You’ve inspired me to dive back into my own story and make it as fun as this. 😀

CHRISTINE. I HAVE A DESPERATE NEED TO BETA THIS WHEN IT’S READY. T^T I’m sure I’ve said this before but I am always so thrilled to hear about your crazy Daystars and their unimaginably-aesthetic world and experience their amazingly-fun-sounding story vicariously through your updates. I am sO excited for FallFic, probably for your novel more than my own. xD

AAAAHHHHH THIS STORY SOUNDS SO COOL

Conclusions are such a unique challenge to write, but it sounds like you have so many great things to work with and it also sounds like it will be an absolute blast to write!

Also: DRAMATIC ANTAGONISTS YESSSSSSS

I love how we always seem to be on the same brainwave. Of my two stories I’m working on for FallFic I’m doing one that is the final book in a trilogy where the original idea came from a dream and the other project was inspired by, you guessed it! Video games.

Anyway, I’m so excited to see how this story unfolds. It honestly sounds amazing. I’m all for large chaotic casts and Extra villains. Add in multiple worlds and it’s almost like you’re writing this story specifically for me xD Not to mention all the aesthetics which honestly blow me away how you can just make everything so pretty and eye catching!

Anyway, best of luck to us both as we work on our projects. May the writing odds be ever in our favor.

Yay, the Daystars are BACK!!!!! I love hearing about this super cool world and your disaster children!

And here’s to both of us writing book 3 of our trilogies (hopefully, haha)! Yes, I’m STILL working on the same Book 3 from last year. *crawls in a hold to die of embarrassment* Still debating on if I’ll do the link up since, you know, IT’S THE SAME BOOK. But here’s to hoping I make a good chunk of progress and finish the dang thing before I die, lol. 😅😂

Ahhhhh I’m so excited to hear more about these characters and this world! I definitely feel like I’ve gotten to know them a bit over your NaNos (or in this case, NaNo Adjacent Thingys), and I’m excited to see them again (especially Princess Dayana, of course. Always here for Princess Dayana.) (but also Tala) (and Aelin)

Anywho! I’m running late, so off I go to comment on your first update! 🙂
