OCTOBER IS HERE. And not only has one of my favorite months of all time graced us with its presence, but it also means gearing up for writing for a lot of us writers which also means… *drumroll* Know the Novel time!
I’m pretty sure we writers thrive in the fall. And by thrive I mean stock up on an unhealthy amount of caffeine and candy and hole away in our writing caves for a month at a time only emerging at odd hours to mumble something incoherent about wordcounts and probably needing food.
It’s great.
But if you’re a family member of said Writing Bean please make sure they remember to eat. We appreciate it very much.
Jokes aside, there really is this rush of creativity this time of year and a bunch of virtual writing events to encourage us to get out those words. If you’re joining in on one OR just have a WIP you’re currently showing some love or are about to, this writing tag is for you!
Introducing…
KNOW THE NOVEL
What is Know the Novel?
Know the Novel is a 3-part tag for writers, one for each of these last three months of the year. Each part features ten questions you can answer on your own blog (or anywhere else on social media!). The questions focus on different parts of your novel and how the writing is progressing.
The tags go as follows:
OCTOBER
- Part One: Introduce Your WIP – This month’s questions are all about introducing your novel! The plot, the characters, the setting, what excites you most about it—let’s share in the joy of this novel that has lit you up!
NOVEMBER
- Part Two: Within the WIP – For part two we’re focusing on the writing process itself. Your victories, your struggles,
the existential crises. It’s a great chance to pull back the curtain and give us readers a glimpse into your writing cave!
DECEMBER
- Part Three: Words Written – By December words have been written. And we want to know all about how the overall process went! This set of questions looks at the end result, how you feel about your accomplishment, and what comes next!
In Summary…
For each month I’ll throw ten writing-related questions your way, you can take the questions and answer them on your social media platform of choice, and then share your link in the linkup I’ll attach below so others can read about your awesome WIP. Easy and fun for all!
IMPORTANT NOTE: This linkup is open to any WIPs you have. Whether you’re doing a writing challenge or writing within your own time, it matters not! The point here is to just have fun and get a chance to share your ideas with others. And you definitely do not have to do all three of the tags. There are basically no rules here but to have fun!
KNOW THE NOVEL
PART ONE: INTRODUCE YOUR WIP
I’d be honored if you used this graphic for your posts, but it’s certainly not required!
THE QUESTIONS
1. What first sparked the idea for this novel?
2. Share a blurb (or just an overall summary)!
3. Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects of the setting?
4. Tell us about your protagonist(s).
5. Who (or what) is the antagonist?
6. What excites you the most about this novel?
7. Is this going to be a series? standalone? something else?
8. Are you plotting? pantsing? plansting?
9. Name a few unique elements in this story.
10. Share some fun “extras” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).
SHARE YOUR LINK
Now the extra fun bit: SHARING YOUR LINK!
Once your post is published, share the URL in the linkup widget below so we can all read about your WIP!
Part 1 of the linkup ends at midnight on October 31st. Part 2 will go live Friday, November 1st!
Do you know, guys, that this is Know the Novel’s 7th year? I cannot believe we’re on its 7th running year. It brings me joy every single time. A HUGE thank you to everyone who has participated. It’s such fun seeing what everyone is working on (soooo many brilliant ideas!) and sharing in the excitement of creating stories.
I cannot wait to see what everyone is cooking up this year!
Ready to create? Let’s goooo!
Are you excited about October? Will you be joining in any writing events this year? If you partake in Know the Novel, don’t forget to add your link in the linkup!
Huzzah! I’m bad about actually joining in…and I’m not sure which WIP I would use…but it still makes me happy when Know the Novel season shows up! *applauds*
Awwww! That makes me happy you enjoy it. It’s one of my favorite blogging things to do. ^_^ And hey, I didn’t even join in on my own blog tag last year. Some seasons just need other things prioritized and that is okay. 💛
When I tell you I have been lying in wait for this post 😂 Know the Novel was so much fun last year, I’m super excited to join in again! I hadn’t realized it’s been going on for seven whole years, jiminy. That’s spectacular. Here’s to seven more!
*flails* That makes me ridiculously happy to hear! I have such a blast seeing what everyone is working on. I cannot wait to read your post!!
Heheh, I was looking forward to Know the Novel so much this year, that I ended up filling out the first tag out in advance. Which is the only reason that I have my link up already. 😂
Thank you for offering this event each year!
I was super impressed by how quickly you got yours up! 😄 I’m so glad you got to join this year. I loved reading about your novel! Thank you for joining in! I hope all the story creating goes well!
I love this so much!! I actually did this last month, but I submitted the link, I hope that’s okay??
That is absolutely okay!! I’m so glad you joined in. I loved reading about your epic story! And since you did part 2, feel free to add your link in November when the second part is live!
Ok, awesome!! Thank you!!
Love to see Know the Novel return! I’m excited to participate again this year.
Yaaaay!!! I cannot wait to see your post! 😄 Your story ideas enchant me every single time!
I’m trying to decide whether or not this is worth doing this year since this would be my second or third time talking about the same duology in my KtN posts. D: I almost always participate, but I feel like this year it would just be more of the same. 🙁
Every year I tell myself to change up the questions some, and then every year I end up not doing it. 🙈 But I always love hearing about what you’re working on and there may be some new followers who’d love to hear about it too! It is absolutely up to you. I certainly never mind people doing it again for the same projects! And Parts 2 and 3 do cater more to ongoing projects if you just want to do those. Whatever you feel like! 💛
This was certainly not meant as a complaint with the tag itself! If anything, it’s a complaint with my own slow progress on this project, lol. I’ll certainly consider participating in the later parts, even if I end up skipping this one!
Oh goodness, no, I think it’s so admirable how you’ve been so dedicated to your projects! Some projects need and deserve long, steady work, and will be all the better for it.
I do hope all the storywork goes well, friend!
Thank you!
IT’S KNOW THE NOVEL SEASON! *cheers*
I haven’t participated in a few years, buut… I might this year because I thiiiink I’m going to be writing a new book this fall?? I haven’t done THAT in a few years either, but I had this old idea come back to me and now I’m really excited about it. So, it might just be time for me to officially hop in on a FicFrenzy and draft a new novel. *confetti* (even though I’m only giving myself like a week to brainstorm and prepare… XD)
EEP. That is so exciting!!! There really is nothing like that rush of creating a new story during the fall. I cannot wait to hear about it! *flails*
Oh, girl, I feel you. I’m kind of down to the wire myself with planning my novel. I still have so much I should work on planning for it but…haven’t. But hey, first drafts are all about that discovery. I say embrace the chaos draft! 😄
