Embracing the Fall

Hot Summer days are slowly being swept up by the wind. The green of leaves are transforming into vibrant oranges and reds. Gloves, scarves, and boots are being donned. Pies are baking, pumpkins are being picked, hot drinks are brewing. There’s a curious smell of excitement in the air, mystery. And with a sudden expectant thrill, one realizes: Autumn is coming. Fall is the best! Slowly, but surely, these miserably hot days are working their way towards crisp, cool air, and what a thrill it gives me! I had a very pleasant summer. I finished writing a book, got a…

My Newest Endeavor – The McGuffin Book

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I mentioned how a new story had snagged me by the throat and insisted I write it? Well, I have given in. For the most part. In truth, I’ve barely written anything in it save for a couple of paragraphs, but it has taken a home in my brain and does not appear to be leaving anytime soon. That’s okay though, I’ve already fallen in love with my two main characters and the idea of writing this story intrigues me. I’ve mainly been planning my characters and making a pinterest board for it…

Every Good Word Writerly Tag

First off, let me wish you all a happy Labor Day! Hope you’re all enjoying this Monday. Can you believe it’s already September? Because, frankly, I can’t. o.O Now then, just recently a new blog for writers was launched by Meghan Gorecki called Every Good Word. If you’re a writer you’re absolutely going to want to check out that place. Trust me, you won’t regret it. I’m a bit late to the party, but over at the site in order to get to know each other they put up a writerly tag for everyone to fill out. I didn’t see…

Sunday Night’s Escapade

It was 9:30 at night and even though I was exhausted from a busy day, I got in my head I just head to finish it. Grabbing my laptop and putting on headphones, I snuggled into bed and opened the word document. Just half a chapter more and I would be done. I could do that and then probably be in bed by 12. That wasn’t too bad. 11 o’clock. . . “I’m getting there! This is totally happening!” 11:30. . . “Oh. . .half an hour until midnight? Well, maybe I can still do it. I’ve come this far.”…

It’s Great to be a Writer When…

(As a follow up to last week’s post.) You’re allowed to call daydreaming “work”. You have entire universes in your head. You get to have experiences you never would in real life. Every experience you do live through is fuel for writing. Your mind is teeming with wondrous things. Your characters become your best friends. Creativity and imagination are the only tools you need. It’s very therapeutic. You realize a writer’s job title is “make stuff up”. All the studying you need to do is simply reading books you love. You get to have adventures everyday. Being insane is part…

It’s Hard to be a Writer When…

You get your best idea at 3 in the morning and have to drag yourself out of bed to jot it down. Your favorite character up and dies unexpectedly. You get a new story idea that you’re just itching to write right in the middle of NaNoWriMo. You have so many novel ideas you know your life isn’t even long enough to write them all. You only get inspired to write during the moments you’re too busy to and never have any motivation for it when you have ample amounts of free time. Writer’s block. Writer’s block Writer’s block. Your…

When Life Makes You Say… [Guest Post]

Today I have the honor of my own beautiful mother guest posting. Over at her blog, Sweet Tea & Simplicity, she always has such encouraging things to say. I just couldn’t help but get her to share a post here on Musings of an Elf! So, without further ado: When Life Makes You Say… “But I just don’t know what on earth to do in this situation!”  God is your Counselor. (Ps. 119:24; Is. 48:17) “But I am afraid!”  God is your Protector. (Joshua 1:9; Ps. 91:1; John 14:27) “But I’m so lonely!” God is your Unfailing Friend; your All-time…

My Stories Like to Explode On Me

In the world of writing I’m what they call a “pantser”. A pantser is someone who writes by “the seat of their pants” with no planning or plotting in sight. Those who do plot are, naturally, called plotters. Now, you see, I’ve always found it odd that I’m a pantser. I’m one who loves to stay organized. Making lists is one of my most favorite things to do. Keeping track of things, having it all straight, making plans ahead of time, that’s what makes me happy. That’s how I function in life. I am a perfectionist after all. But when…

Characters are People Too

There are some people in the world who may claim loving fictional characters like your own children is a bit odd. Ha ha! Silly people. How can I not help but giggle when Lisseria goes off on her rambling tangents? Or snort when old Mortimer does not actually remember his first name? Can I really help smiling as Ethryl calmly strolls across a deck of battling pirates? Is it wrong to want to hug Arthur when he’s having one of his melancholy moments? Or laugh when Nyria’s being. . .Nyria? I mean really. These are people that formed themselves into…
