Comfort films—those movies we turn to again and again in the midst of turmoil. The ones that calm our soul, bring a dose of cheer, that feel like a hot cup of tea on a cold day, filling our insides with goodness and warmth.
As much as I adore books, I am also a huge movie fan (and even more so with TV series, but that’s a topic for another blog post). I just like good stories, guys! In all their forms. And though usually I am all for tales of epic quests and exciting adventures and end-of-the-world stakes (*cough*LOTR*cough*), sometimes my soul needs something softer. Something gentle and cute and heartfelt that shows me the joy in the little things, that adds a touch of whimsy to the mundane, and reminds me that the world really is a beautiful place. The ones that will promise me a smile no matter how dark the days may seem.
So today I am going to share with you five films that do just that, and give you a little peek into my happy places.
FIVE FAVORITE COMFORT FILMS
THE MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH
I had actually talked about my complete love for Winnie-the-Pooh not too long ago, so this may not come as a surprise to many of you.
This film is probably my uttermost happy place (well, it and the Howl’s Moving Castle book, but I already did a whole post on that AHEM). This movie was my childhood. If I had to guess, I’d say it was my most watched childhood movie, one I’d put on and rewind once I got to the end over and over and over. When Pooh said at the end “Can’t we go back to page one and do it over again?” I took him quite seriously. I never wanted it to stop. The Hundred Acre Wood felt like my home. The way Christopher Robin played in the woods with his stuffed animal companions? That was ME. I was always the girl with a stuffed animal in hand wanting to frolic through the woods.
Every single time I put the movie on, I am instantly transported back to my happy childhood days. The sweet music, the soft animation, the characters and all their silly problems and hilarious antics—it brings me joy like few other things. When this movie is on, all is right with the world. There is no sadness or darkness. It is just Pooh and his friends living out their days in the homey Hundred Acre Wood.
Basically, if I am sad, just play this movie for me. It is an instantaneous mood changer.
(And I feel like I could spend this whole post listing all the classic animated Disney movies. Almost every single one of them is a comfort film for me since I grew up with them, but this one is definitely #1.)
TANGLED
My other topmost favorite animated film in all of existence. I could fangirl all the livelong day but YOU GUYS KNOW. I mean, it’s Tangled. There is not a single thing not to love about this film. So instead of talking about all the things I adore about it, I’ll just focus on why it’s such a comfort movie for me.
(Though I did do a group review of it a couple of years back over on Fairy Tale Central HERE if you really want my fangirly thoughts.)
First of all, I feel like the whole aesthetic of the film is my aesthetic. The painted art style to the cozy tower to the bright forest to the cheery castle town—hello yes I want to live there ASAP. The soft, enchanting, fairy tale feel makes me want to crawl into the film and never leave (so instead I just watch the movie 2893 times over). It is a feast for my eyeballs and makes the world look so…pretty.
Secondly, it’s such a happy film. Somehow they created one of the most chilling villains ever (Mother Gothel is messed up, guys) and still created something just downright fun. It’s a rip-roaring good time from Rapunzel bashing Flynn unconscious with a frying pan to a hilarious musical number in a bar to a daring escape from the castle prison. But it’s balanced out so perfectly with the softer scenes. Rapunzel and Flynn’s heartfelt talk in the woods. The floating lantern scene. Even, heartrending though it is, the moment Flynn is dying and they say they were each other’s new dream (brb SOBBING). This movie doesn’t try to tell a wild and crazy tale. It’s just about a girl who decides to leave her tower and discovers all the amazing things the world has to offer.
Thirdly, I felt such a kinship with Rapunzel the moment she came on screen. Her fears, her excitements, her innocence and joys. I think she is the type of protagonist so many of us can relate to. And seeing her face her fears while still holding on to her goodness resounds so deeply within me.
Watching this film for the first time in theaters was one of the most immersing, joyful experiences of my life. And it has been a film that has brought me abounding happiness ever since.
CINDERELLA (2015)
The classic animated Disney Cinderella was probably my second most watched movie after Winnie-the-Pooh. Cinderella was always like a role model for me with her kindness and patience (two things I seriously needed more of). So when trailers popped up for a live-action adaptation of the classic film I was…worried. What were they going to do to my beloved film? Were they going to modernize this beautiful story and turn sweet, caring Cinderella into some tough, emotionless, “Strong Female Character”? How could they possibly do justice to the beauty of the animated movie?
WELL.
It took the film about 0.8 seconds to pull me in and sever all my fears. From the absolutely darling music to the lush, gorgeous setting to Ella’s bright smile, I was whisked away into a Cinderella story I didn’t even know I needed. Not only did it honor the classic animated movie, but it expanded it into something even greater (no instalove YAY!). Child Christine would be aghast at this confession but here it is: I like Cinderella 2015 far more than the animated one. YES. IT’S TRUE. Lily James brought to life my Cinderella. The kind, amiable one whose strength is found through her patience and gentleness. (My sister and I often joke that Lily James should play all the Disney princesses because AWK, she was just so perfect. XD)
It’s another one of those soft stories. Nothing grand and epic and overly dramatic. Just simplistic, and that is where its beauty shines. The lush, bright setting and sweet romance and beautiful reminder of the power of kindness and forgiveness stirs my heart. Whenever I need something to calm my soul, I put on the soundtrack and just soak in the gentle stringed music.
Honestly, I’d be hard pressed to think of a single complaint. And, well, I pretty much always have something to complain about with any story. *sheepish grin* But with this one? It set out to tell a beautiful fairy tale of courage and kindness, and it did it brilliantly.
CHRISTOPHER ROBIN
And we are back to the Winnie-the-Pooh obsession! And…more Disney. (Shhh, I have a problem.)
By this point Disney had given us quite a few live-action films adapted from their animated classics, such as Maleficent (helloooo favorite movie of all time after LOTR), Cinderella, and Pete’s Dragon—all of which I adored. So I was beginning to have a bit more faith in their ability to bring their animated films to life. (Well, except there was Beauty and the Beast, but I won’t get into that.) Although, I have to say, this seemed like an awful strange premise for a movie. An adult Christopher Robin??? A story where the Hundred Acre Wood and Pooh and friends are actually REAL? How would that even work with live-action? I feared it was just going to be awkward and strange, but held on to hope that they wouldn’t totally destroy my entire childhood. (Like with Beauty and the Beast *COUGH*)
As with Cinderella, as I sat in the theaters and the film opened up reading the very passages of the book, showing the adorable map of the Hundred Acre Wood, my fears vanished. And I cried. NO JOKE. We had not made it a full 30 seconds into the movie before I was choking up. Because suddenly not only was I experiencing one of my favorite stories of all time, but in a new way. I had seen the Winnie-the-Pooh movie so many times, getting to experience the story over again in a new format was…everything.
With this one, it truly felt like the writers got it. The care they put into the characters, the simplicity of the plot, down to the aesthetic, it felt so true to the original animated film AND the story A.A. Milne originally created. They could have so easily turned it into a wild, slapstick comedy full of cringe-worthy goofiness and caricatures of the characters we’ve all grown up with. But they didn’t. It held true to that old-fashioned charm few stories have anymore.
And the theme of returning back to one’s childhood joy and wonder resounded down to my core. I always saw my childhood self in Christopher Robin. And suddenly I found my adult self in him too. This movie spoke to my soul and touched my heart in the tender places, but filled it with a healing salve. Getting my beloved Pooh Bear in a whole new way was a gift. Though I’ve literally only seen this one two or three times, it’s one I know I will return to again and again and again when I need a good dose of charm and comfort and the sweet simplicity of childhood wonder.
Also Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell, guys! Apparently Hayley Atwell should just play all the Disney moms too.
KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE
LOOK. It’s not a Disney film! The lone one in the bunch.
This is probably a funny one to add because not only have I just seen it once, but it was only a couple of months ago when I first watched it. YET. It’s one of those movies that I knew, right from the start, would be a happy place for me. My sister and I were watching it together, and by about three minutes in I turned to her and said. “Is it just me or is this one of the most delightful things you have ever seen?”
It’s about a young witch, Kiki, who sets off to spend a year on her own in a new town as is tradition for witches. Sort of their initiation. Except, Kiki can’t really do anything but fly on her broom. So she starts a delivery service. UPS on a broom, if you will.
This is one of those Studio Ghibli films that doesn’t really have a plot, but you love it anyway because it’s just so stinkin’ charming (looking at you My Neighbor Totoro). The story literally just follows Kiki’s ups and downs as she tries to find her way in a new town and discover who she really is inside. It’s a coming of age type of tale. But for me it was so much more. Because it was also a love letter to creatives.
After witnessing how unkind people can be, Kiki falls into depression and soon finds she can no longer fly her broom. Self-doubt racks her violently, and she fears she will never truly find her way in the world, that all her worth is gone. Then a friend tells her she is simply suffering from artist’s block, and that she needs to stop trying so hard and instead go for walks, look at the scenery, doze off at noon. Eventually, she’ll be flying again.
As a writer, the themes of this film touched me deeper than few other stories have. I saw myself in Kiki, accidentally putting my worth in my creative pursuits instead of as a human being. Allowing the hardships of the world attack my joy of creating, and forgetting to turn away from all the ugliness and let the simple, beautiful things in life fill up my soul.
I went in expecting a cutesy, silly, little anime film, and instead was gifted with a story that explores the hardships and wonder of following one’s creative passions.
BUT. It is, in fact, also a cutesy anime film. Themes aside, it’s just ADORABLE. I loved the setting of the seaside town and the cozy little bakery where Kiki sets up her delivery service. And if you’ve ever watched a Ghibli film, you know they excel at romanticizing the mundane things of life. Plus, this one is a bit…tamer and quieter than some of the others.
Though Howl’s Moving Castle is my top favorite Ghibli film, Kiki comes as a very close second, and is definitely the most peaceful one I’ve seen so far. I already know it’s one I shall be returning to again when I need a dose of comfort, happiness, and something to inspire my creative soul.
Honorable mention to Whisper of the Heart, another Ghibli film that has much of the same themes (it’s, in fact, about a writer!) and is absolutely precious.
And that, my friends, is five of my most favorite comfort films. The ones I can always trust to give me a smile or touch my heart when I need it the most. Or just give my eyeballs a feast with all the soft, lush colors and settings. (Hey, I’m a very visual person. The aesthetics are sometimes just as important to me as the plot. *grins*)
Now it’s your turn! I absolutely want to know: What’s your favorite comfort films? And what do you think of mine? Do we share any?? What is a defining factor that makes a movie an instant comfort film for you? Give me all your thoughts!
YES to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh!!! I’m also a firm fan of Tangled and Cindrella (2015), but that Winnie the Pooh movie was my childhood. Pretty much the ultimate comfort film. <3
Aaaahhhhh it sounds like we have the exact same opinion there! It’s always makes me happy finding a fellow Winnie-the-Pooh fan! It’s just such a darling story. ^_^
Yes to all of these!! (Except I haven’t seen any Studio Ghibli films yet, but I’ve been hearing so much about them lately; I should totally watch some of them! Especially Howl.) I absolutely adored the 2015 Cinderella, and I absolutely agree that it’s better than the animated one. Tangled…yes, yes, yes, one of my top favorite Disney animated movies. And Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh…😍
EEP! I’m so happy you agree! They’re all SUCH good films. I could just watch them endlessly. <333
And ooooh, Studio Ghibli! I’ve been on a Ghibli kick just this year and LOVING them. Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky are my TOP faves I’ve seen so far if you’re looking for recommendations. They are delightful!
I love your comfort films!
I’m not sure how I managed to miss out on The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, because I would have LOVED a movie that’s set in a book!
TANGLED YES BEST ANIMATED MOVIE EVER! Definitely one of my comfort films, too.
Ahhh the 2015 Cinderella was amazing!! I need to rewatch that one sometime soon…
Christopher Robin! I watched that one while on the plane to Poland (before COVID, of course), so I have overwhelmingly positive associations…but even independent of that, they did such a good job with it! It was amazing! (Especially Eeyore.)
(But actually…I really loved the live-action Beauty and the Beast? Possibly because I’ve never watched the original? And also, I love Emma Watson? *hides* (Yes, I was irritated about the whole LeFou thing. But. Emma Watson.) (Look, it’s not my fault I’ve never watched the original, my family watched it without me while I was at youth group. XD)
I’ve never seen Kiki’s Delivery Service, but I really want to!!
I have SUCH weird taste in comfort films. I was actually just talking to my sister about this the other day–the first film that pops to mind as a comfort film (after The Princess Bride, of course, but that goes without saying) is National Treasure. XD Idk, that’s just 100% what I would watch if I was sick (which is my criteria for a comfort film, generally speaking). Secondary comfort movies include Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and also probably Age of Ultron. XD
Thank you! ^_^
Well hey, it’s just as delightful watching it as an adult as a kid. If anything, I appreciate it MORE now. One is never too old to hop on the Winnie-the-Pooh train!
TANGLED!!! I’m so glad you agree! That movie never gets old. NEVER.
Disney outdid themselves with Cinderella 2015. I was so, so proud of them! And Christopher Robin tooo! Oh my goodness, DAT MOVIE. *cries happy tears* What a special memory you have! Watching it on the way to Poland sounds like a dream! How precious. <3
And that’s great you like the live-action B&B film! I know a lot of people do, and I can see why! It’s quite gorgeous. It just didn’t do it for me for some reason. I think because I’m so biased toward the animated film. Lol. But if I had never seen the animated one, I suspect I would have very much enjoyed the live-action take, so I totally get you there!
Kiki’s Delivery Service is such a delight! I highly recommend it!
OKAY. BUT. Do you know I was extremely close to putting National Treasure on this list??? NO KIDDING. I’m 100% with you there! There is just something so comforting about that film. I don’t even know what it is??? But it’s just…the best. I have like zero complaints about that movie. AND WINTER SOLDIER TOOOOOOO. Definitely one of my tippity top favorite Marvel films, but also if one of them HAD to be a comfort film for me, it’d be that one. It’s just one of those movies that never lets you down. I don’t even know, but man I love it. And The Princess Bride is the EPITOME of what all good movies should be. Pure perfection right there. So I don’t find your comfort films weird at all! I 100% agree with you on them! (Or maybe we’re both just weird. ;P)
I absolutely love Winnie the Pooh! I mean, who doesn’t? Have a great day, Christine!
Awww! Huzzah for a fellow Winnie-the-Pooh fan!!! *high-fives* Thanks so much, girl! You too! <3
Awww, these are all great picks! I love all of these! And I love your thoughts about the Kiki themes — it’s a new one for me too but so adorableeee! I don’t know what my comfort-films are?? But I certainly adore LOTR, How to Train Your Dragon, Howl’s Moving Castle, Prince of Persia, and The Avengers… maybe those are my comfort films? 😀
Thank you! Kiki was just PRECIOUSSS! I love that we both discovered it this year! 😀
EEP. You listed like some of my most favorite movies of EVER EVER EVERRR. I was very close to listing LOTR buuut it’s not really my go-to for peace and comfort?? More for thrills and epicness and escapism. Haha. Even though it also brings me a lot of comfort so…I don’t know! It’s ALL the things! HTTYD, Prince of Persia, Howl, and The Avengers tooooo. Man, those films make me so happy in so many ways. <3
ACH!!! Winnie the Pooh!! And TANGLED. And ALL THESE MOVIES ARE PERFECT!!! Tangled is definitely among my own comfort films…it’s just so PERFECT…
*HIGH-FIVES FOR SHARED TANGLED LOVE* It is perfect, it really is! I can never grow tired of that absolutely wonderful film. <333
Hmm, let’s see…
Winnie-the-Pooh?
ADORE IT A.A Milne was such a talented writer and created a world that I would 100% run away to (with my sisters of course, for what is an adventure without sisters?)
Tangled?
Rapunzel and Eugene are the ultimate couple for Disney. They are JUST TOO CUTE (despite the fact that he broke the Disney musical film code and actually asked WHY everyone randomly broke out into song. That’s okay, we still love him)
Cinderella (2015)
I loved this film and all the dresses *squeals in utter delight* As a fashion fanatic (yes that’s a thing) I simply adored all the outfits and the Ella’s blue butterfly ballgown?! *dies*
Christopher Robin.
It made me laugh when Christopher Robin was trying to hide Pooh from his nosy neighbor. It made me cry when he lost Pooh, and the last time I watched it was when I had to wake up at 7:30 A.M. to do something, thus rendering me useless for the rest of the day. (totally comfort-film worthy, Christine. Bravo.)
Kiki’s Delivery Service.
Welp *giggles sheepishly* haven’t seen it, only pictures, but I have decided that her kitty is darling (then again, ALL kitties are darling.)
AGREED, AGREED. A.A. Milne had a gift, and I am so grateful to him and the wonderful world he created. It is my childhood home. <3
RAPUNZEL AND EUGENE FOREVERRRR. They are my tippity top favorite Disney couple of all time! (And if anything, I love Eugene because he questioned all the random singing. Lololol.)
OH MAN. The costumes in Cinderella!!! Did I forget to mention that? Because AWK. The dresses are e v e r y t h i n g. Again I say, I have no complains about that movie. It was perfection!
Awwww, yes! I love how Christopher Robin had such a perfect balance of humor and emotion. It was just… *clutches heart* such a beautiful callback to our dear Pooh Bear and friends. <3
Oooh, I hope you get to see Kiki one day. It’s a DELIGHT. AND THE CAT. YES! His name is Jiji and he was like my favorite character! I adored him so much! (But yes, ALL cats deserve all the love!)
BRB, going to have a movie marathon…
Seriously, I admire how you narrowed this down to just five movies. I could never.
Secondly, I have only seen Tangled and Cinderella off this list. And I’ve only seen Cinderella once.
I really want to watch Winnie the Pooh soon. I just finished reading the first Winnie the Pooh book and I absolutely adored it! It was such a homey book. And I mean, I suppose for someone who dreams of writing a book about stuffed animals, it was perfect. (seriously, I mean…if my Stones ever become like the animals of the Hundred Acre Woods I would probably cry)
I would probably add Enchanted and Lilo and Stitch to this list. I love them SO much! No comfort film could ever top those two for me.
Anyway, great post Christine! You’ve got me in a movie-watching mood!
Movie marathon!!! Do it! Those are the BEST! 😀
It was honestly SO. HARD. I keep thinking of others I could have done. Like Anne of Green Gables or some 19829384 other Disney films. Lol. This was not an exhaustive list by any means. I may have to do a part two someday! ;D
Ooooh! You just read the first book? Isn’t it THE most charming thing ever? If you enjoy the books, I suspect you will love the movie too! They’re very similar. They did such a good job bringing the charm and coziness to life via the film. I adore them BOTH. (And my stuffed animals coming to life was honest to goodness my greatest wish when I was a child. I’m still bitter it never happened. XD)
ENCHANTED. LILO AND STITCH. Aaahhhhh I adore those!!! You simply cannot go wrong them! Fantastic picks!
Thanks so much! <3
Christopher Robin is the best!!! I felt that film so much because it’s about growing up and losing your childhood sense of wonderment and then finding it back again – my favourite scene is when Christopher Robin hugs Pooh in that meadow. I didn’t cry through – it takes a LOT for me to cry when watching or reading something. My favourite film is 2019 Little Women – it resonated so much with me and I love it to bits! Any Disney film gives me comfort actually, but my faves are Big Hero Six and Raya and the Last Dragon (have you watched the last one? If you haven’t, then you should!)
Great post!
YOU UNDERSTAND!!! Yes, yes, yes! That is exactly me. I felt such a deep connection to Christopher and how he lost his wonder and had to get it back. It was just…so, so beautiful. *clutches heart*
I’ve yet to see the 2019 Little Women, but I’ve heard such good things about it! I adore Little Women, so I’m excited to see it one day.
I hear you on Disney films! I am SUCH a Disney nerd. Pretty much all their stuff brings me comfort–I totally agree. AND BIG HERO SIX. AAAHHHHH!!! I love that one! I’ve sadly not seen Raya and the Last Dragon yet but I really want to! It looks fun!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it. ^_^
Yessssss, comfort movies!
Tangled is one of my favorites—she’s my favorite Disney Princess and it’s one of my favorite fairy tales. I didn’t get to see that one in theaters but if it ever makes a return, I’d love to see it there. I’ve heard the lantern scene was STUNNING on the big screen.
And Christopher Robin! I’ve only see it once but I really need to rewatch it! It was so much fun and so cute and just…I loved it.
My favorite comfort movies would probably be the Middle-earth movies (especially LOTR and An Unexpected Journey—the Shire is, like, peak cozy aesthetic XD), While You Were Sleeping, Pride & Prejudice, and Emma (even though this one is a miniseries I always end up watching it all the way through like a movie, hehe).
They are the BEST!
YES! *high-fives* Rapunzel is my favorite Disney princess too! (Well, her and Belle!) That would be AMAZING if they reshowed it in theaters one day, because it really was a feast for the eyeballs!
Wasn’t it the most precious film? I didn’t know what to expect with a live-action Winnie-the-Pooh movie but, man, they knocked it out of the park. <3
I couldn’t agree more about the Shire! The beginning of FOTR and An Unexpected Journey are some of my FAVORITE scenes. I just adore the Shire so very much! And OOOOH. Those period films/mini-series are fantastic comfort movies! Yes! OH OH. Are we talkin’ the 2009 Emma mini series? THAT’S MY FAVE. If anything I like it more than P&P, which is saying something!
Yesssss, the 2009 is so good! I’ve seen a few other adaptations but that is by far my favorite Emma. (The casting! The cinematography! The balance between humor and feels!)
I TOTALLY AGREE. Even though I, er, have not see any other adaptations. *sheepish grin* But I can’t imagine anything beating it. It was perfection!
YES TO CHRISTOPHER ROBIN. I LOVE THAT MOVIE SO SO MUCH. <3 <3
WASN’T IT JUST THE MOST CHARMING THING??? I’m so happy you loved it too! It was a pure DELIGHT.
My comfort films include the 2009 BBC Emma series, Christopher Robin, National Treasure (yeah it’s just awesome), Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, I Can Only Imagine, The Princess Bride, and The Christmas Card. 🙂
EEEEEE!!!! SUCH GOOD ONES. I adore the 2009 Emma Series! And National Treasure and The Princess Bride are some of my favorite films ever ever EVER. You already know my complete and utter love for Christopher Robin. *grins* I don’t think I’ve see the others you’ve mentioned. I’ve heard of I Can Only Imagine and would definitely like to give it a try one day! I’m not familiar with the other two though? I need to look them up! 😀
I really need to watch some more Studio Ghibli films, I keep hearing about them (actually, I’ve seen Howl’s Moving Castle, didn’t love that in part because I love the book and only recently learned it was Studio Ghibli).
Cinderella 2015 is definitely a comfort film for me too, aesthetically its just “me” and I also often have something to complain of, but this is pretty perfect.
The Apple Dumpling Gang movies. Friendly Persuasion. 2008 Emma. Ever After. Some Hallmarks. Bringing Up Baby, Monkey Business, Roman Holiday, How to Steal a Million. My Man Godfrey. The Thin Man Mysteries (yes can be scary, but there is still something relaxing about old mysteries plus Nick and Nora are hysterical).
Pirates of the Caribbean isn’t exactly relaxing and yet I’d still say the first three are rather comfort films if I avoid parts I don’t like.
I have been HOOKED on Ghibli! There’s been a couple I didn’t really like (Princess Mononoke and The Tale of Princess Kaguya) but the others I’ve seen so far have been FANTASTIC. I feel you on the Howl movie. Even though it is, in fact, my favorite Ghibli film, I love the book 30000000x more. The film is a ton of fun though! I just have to separate them in my mind. XD
Awwwww yes! Disney made true magic with that film. I was so, so, pleased. <3
I am ashamed at how many of these you’ve listed I’ve not seen! I LOVE the Emma series though and Bringing Up Baby is hilarious! I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Roman Holiday, but it’s been AGES; I barely remember a thing from it. I need to give it another watch! These others I don’t think I’ve seen! But I feel you on old films. I don’t watch them a LOT, but there is something so cozy about them!
Ooooh! I totally know what you mean! I think since pretty much all of us grew up on those films, there’s something homey and familiar about them. The first movie especially makes me feel so nostalgic. It’s a masterpiece!
Hi Christine! How are you?
I just ADORE the Cinderalla (2015) movie!! Can I just have her gorgeous ball gown?! *wonders where I’d actually wear it* *decides that it doesn’t matter cause it’s AWESOME*
Yes! Lily James is AMAZING!!!
And I love how Flynn (aka Eugene) is the first Disney prince to break the stereotype! (I remember when we first saw the movie we couldn’t stop laughing; it was so hilarious!)
I also love the Christopher Robin movie (have you seen the animated Pooh movie from 2011?)
I’ve never seen Kiki’s Delivery Service; though I have seen The Secret World of Arriety (and I love the animation. I used to play the Professor Layton nintendo games, and that movie reminded me of the game’s asthetic!)
So yeah, those three (Cinderella, Christopher Robin, and Tangled) are definite favorites of mine *and glances at list of so many others* But I won’t get into that. Otherwise we’d be here all night XD
Hey, Lily! I’m doing well! Hope you are too! ^_^
I’M SO GLAD YOU AGREE. Isn’t it just the most beautiful film??? And DAT DRESSS. I’m with you, who needs a reason to have it? I’ll wear it anyway!
Flynn is my favorite Disney prince ever ever EVERRR. Oh man, he is just pure gold. I can’t even with that boy. XD
Wasn’t Christopher Robin just the sweetest film? I was so proud of Disney. (Shockingly I have not seen the 2011 movie! I always meant to but somehow never got around to it. I really need to do that!)
Ooooh! Arrietty! I love that one! It’s so cute. I’ve played Professor Layton!!! Just the first game, but I ADORED it. The aesthetic was e v e r y t h i n g. I never thought about it and Arrietty having a similar vibe, but I think I can see that!
I feel you! I forced myself to stick with 5, but I could have easily gone on and on and on! Maybe one day I’ll have to do a part two. XD
Ah, I’d be up for a part 2!
Yes! Professor Layton all the way!
Oo, did I forget to mention that aside from Flynn I also adore Kristoff from Frozen? Those two are definitely the best princes (or Disney dudes!)
And yes! Definitely check out the 2011 Pooh film (and bring tissues ’cause it’s so sweet!) 🙂
Kristoff is FANTASTIC!!! Flynn is my tippity top favorite, probably followed by the Beast. But I adore sweet Kristoff too, for sure. <3
Awww, now I am excited about watching it! But I will definitely have tissues on hand. Thanks for the warning. ;D
TANGLED!!!!!!!!!!!! YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!! (I’m the kind of person that doesn’t choose favorites for things, but TANGLED! How could I not choose a favorite?? XD) I LOVE Tangled so much!!!!! Eeee, I just want to squeal with delight at the mention of it!!!!!😁 It’s definitely a comfort film for me! I also love the 2019 Aladdin, and the 2015 Cinderella is so inspiring!!!! (Also, I agree that Disney could have made better decisions with Beauty and the Beast . . . .) But anyway, I loved reading this post, Christine!!!!!! 😀 And now I want to go watch Christopher Robin again because I forgot about how awesome it was!!😉 XD
*HIGH-FIVES FOR ALL THE TANGLED LOVE* IT’S. JUST. SO. GOOOOD!!! I never grow tired of it!
Oh my goodness, I loved The 2019 Aladdin! I was a bit nervous about that one too but it was AMAZIIIING. I’ve enjoyed most of the live-action films! If only B&B had been better… *sigh* BUT STILL. At least a lot of them have been fantastic! 😀
*GASPS* Um, YES to all of these!!!! (Well, I’ve actually never heard of Kiki’s Delivery Service before, but it looks so cute!) I’ve seen the rest of these though and after reading this, now I wanna go rewatch them again! XD (Especially The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh–I haven’t seen that one in a loooong time.) But Cinderella? Ohhhhh man. I definitely agree that the 2015 version was way better than the animated one!!! (For one, the prince actually had a real name…) XD Also, Hayley Atwell is BY FAR the Disney Mom™. XD Honestly, the fact that she can play a sweet, caring mother in some movies and then turn around and play a gun-wielding, hand-to-hand combating special military agent in others just proves how awesome of an actress she is in general. XPP
In addition to the ones on your list, some of my other favorite comfort films would be Captain America: The Winter Soldier (I literally have every scene in that movie memorized) XD, The Finest Hours (which I 100% recommend watching if you haven’t!), the 2019 Aladdin, aaand the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice!!! (‘Cause Colin Firth is everything in that movie.) XD
OH. ALSO, ALSO, ALSO. I started The Lunar Chronicles over the weekend and *dies* THOSE BOOKS. WHY AM I JUST NOW READING THEM!?!?!?!? I’m on Cress right now and I gotta say, all of those boys (Kai, Wolf, and Thorne) have stolen my heart, hidden it somewhere, and I’ll probably never find it again. XD (I just met Jacin a few chapters back and still don’t know what to think of him, but…eh, I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt for now.) 😉 BUT WOLF. He’s probably my favorite so far (Thorne close behind, ’cause that dude is just life) XD but Wolf…like, IS HE NOT JUST A BOOK VERSION OF BUCKY BARNES??? He’s seriously mah boi and needs to be hugged until the day he dies (which *whimpers* I hope never happens.) XD *takes deep breath* So yeah. I’m…not sure where my mental state will be in after reading this series, but IT’LL SO BE WORTH IT. (And, it sounds terrible, but if Levana dies, I will be the happiest person ever. I just…ugh, I can’t even think about her right now. *shudders*) So there’s my fangirling! (Although, I could go on but this comment is already way too long to be legal…) XD
*HIGH-FIVES* It looks like we share so many of the same movie loves!!! And I couldn’t agree more about Hayley Atwell. That woman is a QUEEN. I love her so much! If she just wants to keep playing in alllll the Disney things, you won’t hear my complaining one tiny bit.
WINTER SOLDIER. Only one of my most favorite Marvel films ever! I’ve shamefully not seen The Finest Hour. I need to go look this up! BUT 2019 ALADDIN. I ADORED THAT ONE. It transitioned from the animated film SO SO WELL. I was honestly shocked out how good it was. And SO. MUCH. YES. to the BBC Pride and Prejudice! EEP. I’m so happy to see someone else share this opinion! Most people I know seem to love the Keira Knightley one? And, yeah, it’s a gorgeous film, but the BBC one is MY Pride and Prejudice! (And, yes, Colin Firth is fabulous. XD)
*SCREAMS FOR A MILLION BILLION YEARS* You’re reading it! You’re reading it! This makes me so happyyy! I’m thrilled you’re loving it! Aren’t the characters just e v e r y t h i n g??? Thorne is my tippity top favorite of all time, but I do love them ALL. I…I have never thought of Wolf basically being Bucky. :O WELP. NOWI LOVE HIM EVEN MORE. Wolf is seriously preciousss! And I do like Jacin, but he never really became my fave. Poor boy had to compete with Kai, Thorne, and Wolf and, ya know, those are terribly unfair odds. XD And ooooh, Levana. *shivers* She is something else, isn’t she? UGH. Marissa Meyer just went above and beyond with these characters! I AM SO IMMENSELY PLEASED YOU’RE ENJOYING THESE!!! Do please come fangirl about them ANY TIME! 😀
*High fives you back* IKR!?!?! Haha, YES! Bring on Atwell, Disney!!! You need to get her into more of your stuff! 😉
SAME, girl!!!! Oh man, you HAVE to see The Finest Hours! It definitely is a suspenseful edge-on-your-seat kind of movie (and based off real events), but has to be one of the best I’ve ever seen! It’s also *cough* conveniently on Disney+ too… 😉 YESSSS on Aladdin!!!! It’s actually my favorite Disney fairy tale remake, but the Cinderella one is absolutely right behind it! 😀 (Besides, Will Smith as the Genie is the BOMB!!) XD *GASPS* YES!!!! Girl, you have NO IDEA how excited I am to find another BBC P&P fan!!! Lots of people I know seem to prefer the Keira Knightly one too, but that one just did not cut it for me. (And for some reason, I’m not a super big fan of Keira Knightly’s acting in the first place… *slowly shrugs*) XD But for the BBC one, I seriously don’t see how it could get any better. *happy sighs* The costumes, the romance, the banter, that dancing, Collin’s creepy wave, the poor nerves of Mrs. Bennett…it’s a comfort film if I ever saw one! 😉
*SCREAMS WITH YOU* YEEESSSS, I’M
FINALLYREADING IT!!!!!!!! XD ;P Oh my word, the characters are more than e v e r y t h i n g!!! Lolol, Thorne is just a RIOT (his snark and charisma is THE BEST)!!! XD (And when paired up with Cinder? I’m pretty sure they could top even the snarkiest person alive.) 😛 Aahahahahha!!!! I know!!!!! It took the breath out of me when I made that realization! XD Ah, yes. I think I am going to end up liking Jacin, but *shakes head* I definitely agree that with the Big Three up against him, he stands zero chance. XD Oh man, I don’t think I’ve ever come across someone as…annoyingly creepy as Levana. I think Fairest tells her story though, so that will be an interesting read (but I always think it’s cool learning about the villain’s backstory.) 😉 YESSS, SO AM I!!!! Awww, thank you!!! I’ll definitely have to do that!! (Especially if the series ends as awesome as I’m hoping it will!) XD 😀Oooh, The Finest Hour is on Disney+? WELL THEN. Clearly I need to give it a watch!
Maleficent is actually my favorite of the live-action remakes, but Cinderella comes as a veryyyy close second and is definitely the epitome of a comfort film for me. Aladdin would be a third for me but it’s ALMOST tied with Cinderella. It was just so good! And I agree, Will Smith did a marvelous job as the genie. That was such a tough role to fill, as we all grew up with the irreplaceable Robin Williams. But Will Smith nailed it!
It is THE BEST finding someone else who understand the BBC P&P love! I totally agree with everything you said! (And, yeah, Keira Knightley has never been a huge favorite actor of mine, to be honest.) But the BBC miniseries is just perfection!
ALL THE TLC LOVE IS JUST MAKING ME GRIN SO MUCH. Oh man, oh man, Thorne and Cinder’s bantering relationship added years to my life, I’m pretty sure. They are the BEST. And I love the platonic friendship between them. You don’t see that much, but it is so fun and refreshing! All the many character dynamics are spectacular! Fairest DOES tell Levana’s story, yes! I will warn you, that one isn’t quite as clean as the main books…which was disappointing. It’s much darker and, well, about a villainous, so she does some pretty meh things. It wasn’t my favorite read, but it was pretty fascinating getting her backstory. BUT WINTER NOW. I think you are going to LOVE IT!!! 😀
Ohhhh, YES! I’ve seen Maleficent and that was a super sweet movie! (Angelina Jolie did a FABULOUS job and TOTALLY nailed the snark and sarcasm!) XD
IKR!?!? Marissa Meyers did an AMAZING job with making each of her characters so lovable but unique at the same time! Oh, okay, thanks for the heads up!! If that’s the case, then I’ll probably skip that book. (A friend of mine had been wary of reading TLC because of some content in the later books, so I bet that’s where most of it came from.) BUT YES. I’m super excited to read Winter!!! She was just mentioned in Cress so my interest has really been piqued with that! 😉
Angelina Jolie NAILED. IT. She brought Maleficent to LIFE. It was perfect!
Yeah, I think Fairest was about the only one with much content. Although…it’s been a WHILE since I’ve read them all, but it seems like they stay mostly clean aside from that one. I also TOTALLY recommend the Stars Above anthology once you’ve finished them all. It’s an anthology of short stories set in the TLC world and SO SO GOOD.
You have fantastic taste! My sister and I just watched Kiki’s Delivery Service, it makes me so happy.
Awww, thanks! You did? Aaaahhhhh! I’m so glad you got to see it and enjoyed it! It is THE most happy little thing. <333
This post made me so happy and now I just want to go and binge all my favorite soft, comfort movies! <3
Ahh, I haven’t seen the first or last on your list but all the rest I know are so amazing. I just re-watched Christopher Robin and my heart! it’s beautiful!! *cries* AND TANGLED. YES. YES. YES. Everything about it is just…absolutely glorious.
A few of my favorite cinematic happy places are Up, Big Hero 6, Emma (BBC 2009), Little Women (1994 becuz it is my childhood), and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe because Mr. Tumnus. And Lucy. (the entire narnia book series is one whole pile of comforting beautifullness to me.)
Also. The Lord of the Rings. Just because of course it is.
I loved this post so much and my mood has improved dramatically just from the gifs. ;D <3<3<3
Awwww! I’m glad it made you happy! It definitely put me in the mood for a movie marathon myself! ^_^
Isn’t Christopher Robing just the sweetest film ever??? AND TANGLED OF COURSE. The. Best!!!
AAAHHHH! YOU HAVE SUCH GOOD TASTE. I adore ALL of those! Up and Big Hero 6 make me cry every single time though, but good gracious do I adore them. The 2009 Emma is like my FAVORITE Austen adaptation, and I loooove the 1994 Little Women! Such a great one! I couldn’t agree more about Narnia! The books are truly the epitome of comfort and home and happiness, and I ADORED the LWW movie. They did a spectacular job!
And OF COURSE Lord of the Rings. It goes without saying. ;D
Oh my goodness, I’m grinning so hard right now! So glad you enjoyed it (and the gifs *beams*). Thank you so much for commenting! <3
Okay but Christopher Robin is LITERALLY SO WHOLESOME AND COMFORTING. I honestly wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. It’s so cuuuuute <33
I COULDN’T AGREE MORE. I didn’t know what to think about a live-action Winnie the Pooh with a grown up Christopher Robin??? BUT IT WAS P E R F E C T. *cries happy tears*
Such great films! I used to love the Winnie the Pooh movie when I was a kid, though I think I actually liked The Little Mermaid more, so…. 🤷🏼♀️ haha sorrynotsorry. 😜
TANGLED!!!!!!!!! Ahhhh, my baby!!!!! I ADORE Tangled—it is my top fave movie of all time and I will never get tired of it even though I think my family has, haha! Rapunzel and Eugene are THE BEST EVER and I will stand by that until my dying day. I just love them so muchhhhh!!!!!! This movie is the whole reason I started writing to begin with, so I owe it a TON. 😍😍😍😍
Cinderella and Christoper Robin—yes, yes, yes!!! I LOVE these two! I actually watched Christoper Robin after seeing you mention it in a blog post, and I loved it! And Cinderella is just the best—Ella is such a strong character without fighting skills that I find fascinating to pull off in a story well which they did in spades with this movie. I admire her so much. ☺️
I was also wondering about your opinion on blogs? See, I’m not on Instagram anymore due to not agreeing with their privacy policies, and I’ve seen some of my favorite bloggers doing less there and more on social media which kinda leaves me out of the loop a bit, and I guess my question is as an aspiring author who wants to publish someday, is a blog still a good option for marketing, connecting with fellow readers and writers, etc? I was also thinking of starting a YouTube channel too, but I wanted to know your opinion on doing a blog as well. ☺️
I hope you have a great weekend!
Hey, The Little Mermaid is a FANTASTIC movie! I adore that one too! I think that was one of the few we didn’t own on VHS when I was little (lolz #90skid) so I didn’t see it QUITE as much as some others, but I still loved it! And I watched the TV series they made from it ALL. THE. TIME. I loved that show!
YES. TANGLED!!! I was actually thinking about you when I was talking about Tangled because I knew it’s such an important movie for you and inspired you to write. It’s just SO good. *happy tears* And I am with you. RAPUNZEL AND EUGENE FOREVER AND EVER AND EVERRR.
Awww, you watched Christopher Robin on my recommendation? I’m so honored! And I’m glad you liked it! It’s just the sweetest. And Cinderella tooooo, yes! I was so proud of them for making a character with such a soft strength. We do not see that nearly enough anymore, but I think it’s a beautiful thing. Disney did me proud with that one. <3
Such great questions and I’m honored to be asked! I’m not always the greatest marketer, so I don’t know how helpful I can be… Haha. But I shall be happy to give you my experiences! I am learning Instagram is THE place to be right now. I get way, way more interaction and farrr more followers over there. But I 100% understand you not wanting to do it anymore. No judgments here on that! I also know that things fluctuate. I mean, twitter used to be “the thing” but a lottt of people have given up on it, and I think even Facebook isn’t as popular as it once was.
Blogs have definitely gotten less popular. It’s not their hay day anymore, sadly. BUT, again, things fluctuate so much, I wouldn’t be surprised if blogs made a comeback. In fact, I’ve been getting a lot more interaction here in the last year than I have in a WHILE. I guess during all the 2020 craziness, people decided to return to blogging. It seems a smidge more active in this past year than it has for the past few years? That may just be in my circles, but it gives me hope blogging isn’t completely dead yet!
I do think Instagram and YouTube are the main places people in our age group hang out (or the YA readers in general). I know a lot of bloggers moved over to YouTube, so if you wanted to do that I think it’d be GREAT. I doubt the popularity of YouTube is going anywhere soon, so I suspect you can’t go wrong there.
As far as blogging itself. It has been a HUGE blessing to me. I find it so cathartic to have a space to just share thoughts. I know I don’t have a big following, but I love doing it anyway just for me. And the few followers I do have are the DEAREST people (like you! <3) and bless me so very much. So if you’re thinking about blogging, I say give it a try! If you find it’s not your thing, that is 100% okay. You don’t have to do it forever. And it IS a good way to connect with people. I find blogs much more personable than the fast moving style of things like Instagram.
ANOTHER great option (and one I’ve been meaning to do for aaages) is a newsletter! Having an email list is I think a BIG thing for published authors. Being able to go straight to followers’ inboxes is really handy and, again, more personable. Though you may would need a blog or just a website in order for people to be able to find you and sign into your newsletter. AND, unfortunately, you have to share a mailing address with email lists, so you’d probably need to open a P.O. Box for that option.
But whew. I didn’t mean to ramble this much! XD BASICALLY I don’t think you can go wrong either way. Blogging may not be “the thing” right now, but it is such a fun way to connect with people. But I also think YouTube is GREAT. I don’t personally use YouTube as a platform, but it does seem to be the new way to blog, so!
Hopefully all that babbling made sense! Haha.
Very much want to go back now and re-watch Winnie the Pooh and relive all the childhood feelings. *sniffles* It might just be the very definition of a comfort film! <3 And also super funny. My siblings and I quote Rabbit’s “I don’t think so! It isn’t meant to be!” frequently. XD
TANGLEEEED. I will never not grab an opportunity to fangirl over Tangled, even if it’s just incoherent screeches. LOVE THAT MOVIE SO MUCH. It’s just so perfect. <3 And you’re SO right- it’s such a perfect balance of lighthearted and serious! It’s ridiculously funny and FUN, but those other, not-so-lighthearted scenes? They’re not lacking at all. I clearly remember the day after I first watched it- I was literally at the zoo with my family and my thoughts were on Tangled the whole day. It just stuck with me, especially Flynn’s death and just… GAHHH. (yeah, the “you were my new dream” thing? *SOBS*) Did I mention how perfect that movie is? Because that movie is perfect.
AHHH CINDERELLA! I just re-watched it again a few days ago and MY GOODNESS. I think it gets better every time I see it. (That’s the mark of a good movie, right there. If you enjoy it more with each time you watch it? You know you’ve really got something good.) I just love Ella so much, and the movie is just so beautiful, and Kit is so charming (no pun intended hehe), and I would literally die to have a dress like that. XD ALSO a perfect movie.
ALSO YES TO CHRISTOPHER ROBIN. I really need to watch it again because I’ve only seen it once, but I remember loving it! The music at the beginning got me, too. *sniffles* And HA, I guess you’re right. Hayley Atwell SHOULD just play all the Disney moms. xD
*dreamy sigh* I now want to go back and watch alll these movies over again. What a perfectly lovely list of comfort films. <3
Awwww, YES. You understand!!! It’s truly the epitome of golden childhood days. <3 And Rabbit is SO quotable! Gotta love ‘im. XD
TANGLED TANGLED TANGLED. It really is PERFECTION. I love that you couldn’t even focus on being at the zoo because the movie stuck with you so much. I TOTALLY understand. I was in a dreamy daze myself after seeing it for the first time. It just brings me so much joy! *sobs happy tears*
I am in a SERIOUS mood for a rewatch of Cinderella myself. Although…I always am. It’s one of those movies I never, ever get tired of, and it really does seem to somehow get BETTER with each viewing! You’re so right! Ella and Kit are the most precious cinnamon rolls and I love them with all my heart. <333
CHRISTOPHER ROBIN WAS SO SWEET GAH. I’m glad you loved it too! Disney certainly has their faults sometimes, but my goodness, can they make some amazing films when they put their mind to it.
Hayley Atwell totally needs to be all the Disney moms and Lily James all the Disney princesses and we’ll be good to go. ;D
I made myself want to go rewatch all the things too! Haha. It makes me happy you approve of my list! Thanks, Emily! ^_^
*melts into happy puddle*
I was so happy when I saw Tangled, cause it’s one of my favourites, but honestly it was Cinderella (2015) that got me so hard with happy emotions. I love that film SO much. Every time I have watched it, it fills me with so much joy (and sadness because it’s so sad in four scenes and they break me each time). I relate to Ella so hard, and the theme, “have courage, be kind” is so my thing. Because of how amazing this film is, I know it affects how I enjoy the other live actions. None of them are better than this one. *all the heart eyes*
Oh, I was wondering how you felt about Christopher Robin when I was reading about The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. I really enjoyed that film more than I thought I would (because I’m skeptic and doubt any goodness of a live action based off the animated version until I watch it). I’m really glad to hear that a fan like you enjoyed it (because that’s where it should count the most).
Ohhh, I must watch Kiki’s Delivery Service. It just sounds amazing.
YOU GET IT. YOU GET IT. Sooo much yes to Cinderella. Oh man, that MOVIE. *clutches heart* It is cinematic perfection, it truly is. The EMOTION. The COSTUMES. The SCENERY. The THEMES. I get chills every time Ella says “I forgive you.” at the end. I MEAN !!! It’s just so powerful. I’m so pleased to find someone else who also loves it that much! Disney did us a good one!
Oooh yes, Christopher Robin was precious. I seriously did not know what to expect from that one myself, but I was more than pleased! I think they did a wonderful job. ^_^
And YES. Kiki is SO CUTE! I think you’d adore it!
This post alone gave me all the comfy-cozi feels!!! ^_^ I haven’t seen Kiki’s Delivery Service yet, but all the rest… so much YES!!!
Pooh Bear was definitely my childhood, watching the Many Adventures or some of the other movies (Piglet’s Big Movie, The Tigger Movie, Pooh’s Heffalump Movie) Awk! All the happy feels!!!
Some of my comfort films are The Quest for Camelot, The Swan Princess, Anastasia, and The Little Mermaid. <333
D’awww! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! And love these movies too! 😀 But oooh yes, I think you’d adore Kiki. It was just the happiest little film!
*HIGH-FIVES FOR POOH BEAR* Anything Pooh related brings me immeasurable happiness. I am so with you!
OOOOH. All four of those are excellent movies! Though, strangely, none of them were super huge parts of my childhood?? I certainly saw them a few times, but they weren’t in the group of films I’d just live and breathe and watch on repeat for some reason. Maybe because we didn’t own any of them. Lol. But they are still such great films and I can see why they’re comfort ones for you. ^_^
AHHHH SAME I LOVE THE 2015 CINDERELLA!!! *fangirls with you* And Tangled is SO GOOD!! I want to watch it again now XDD
Fellow Cinderella and Tangled fan!!! *HIGH-FIVES* They’re just so good YES. I never get tired of them! <3
